Finished parking in rusty area for 6 months Unfortunately I had to park my blade outside (near the sea) under a fabric cover, under top-covered parking for 6 months. Thankfully I've got her parked under a fabric cover in a fully enclosed garage now, but still close to the sea, which is good for me, bad for the bike. I run on the beach most mornings, and luckily I'm not made of metal. Though sometimes I like to think I have balls of steel Rusty fairing bolts A few fairing bolts on my 2004 Blade (that I bought 2nd hand) that are completely 100% brown/rusted on the outer surface, while others are perfect. Obviously some are steel and others are aluminium. So I'm thinking of replacing all of the fairing bolts with some red anodized aluminium ones. I'm guessing these will do just fine? (maybe I'll get black bolts incase I decide to spray the bike black in a few years) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Red-M6-6MM-...nda-CBR600RR-CBR1000RR-CBR900RR-/361425262151 Slightly rusty frame bolts Then I've got at least one (I've not studied the bike yet) frame bolt which is showing some light spotting of rust. I'll do a full inspection and take some pics soon. But I'm guessing that's going to be less trivial to replace. Firstly I'm guessing a frame bolt can't be aluminium because it needs to be strong? Secondly if I pull a frame bolt out, the frame might shift and then I might struggle to get the new bolt in? I don't care about minor spots of rust on frame bolts. But I don't want any bolts seizing up due to rust. I want to keep everything in good nick. Tips to prevent rust? I only recently read about the tip of riding the bike after washing it. I've washed my bike 3x since owning it and each time I just let it stand outside in the sun and light breeze to dry for a few hours before putting the cover back on. Perhaps I'll buy a high power electric blower some time. Those things are awesome. But aside from simply drying the bike after washing it. Is there some crap I can coat the metal with to prevent rust? I've heard of spraying the radiator with WD40 / Q20. Any thoughts on such things? Stuff like paraffin and silicon spray come to mind, but I've got absolutely no idea what I'm doing when it comes to preventing rust or spraying coatings on anything to prevent rust whatsoever.
Hi, alloy bolts will corrode the same as steel in a salt atmosphere, You would be far better going for stainless, I have been sing ACF50 for a few years on my bike as anti corrosion protection. it is well worth using and most people on here will also sing its praises, I buy mine in aerosol and lasts ages.
+1 for ACF50, the stuff is brilliant....plus it smells nice too! For fairing bolts and round the calipers I douse a rag and apply liberally.
Thanks @Jez and @hitch I'll check out ACF50. @Jez thanks for the stainless tip. I never thought of that. I thought anodized is supposed to not corrode? My father has an apartment in an ultra salty area with anodized aluminium windows that are about 10+ years old. No corrosion on them. I expect aluminium will corrode if it is placed with dissimilar metals, however those bolts I linked above come with the fairing bolts and clips as a kit, so I would hope that the included bolts and clips are aluminium too.
Go titanium much better than stainless or aluminium! Stainless can still corrode unless medical grade
Yes aluminium that is anodised and then painted, bolts will only have soft anodising which quickly wears off, I also wouldn't use aluminium bolts for any load bearing places like the subframe bolts, only fairing bolts to be honest and soft anodising after a while will be affected by salt
If replacing its got to be titanium stainless/aluminium will tarnish, the shock of buying titanium hurts but in a few years time it will of paid dividends . ACF50 is mega last few years I have been having All Year Biker come to the house and apply an all over coat best £70 you will spend.
If you buy in the right places titanium will be cheaper than OEM bolts to replace, but yes a little more expensive than aftermarket Aluminium or stainless
