Tail Tidy LED number plate lamp - replacement?

Has anyone successfully replaced the LED number plate light that is usually pre installed on a tail tidy?

 

Yeah I have, my R&G tail tidy light started to flicker. Bought another R&G one, piece of p1$$ to fit as well.

My R&G one blew to. Checked MOT site and it’s not needed by law or MOT,I removed from my bike, got an mot last week no problems

 

That's worth knowing.

 

My TT came from Tasmania off ebay. It's a single LED lamp set into a chrome boss. The R&G replacement unit wouldn't fit, or it might with a bit of magic

 

If you have a light fitted it has to function correctly, better to just take it off if flickering.

 

However, with the new MoT laws effective from 20 May this year, a 'number plate light if fitted must be operative'.

(I researched this for my RR4 when restoring the rear fender/tail light section.)

4.7 Rear registration plate lamp

4.7.1 Presence, condition and operation This inspection applies to all motorcycles fitted with front and rear position lamps. Registration plate lamps are required to illuminate the rear registration plate. Most motorcycles will light the registration plate using the rear position lamp, but some will use a separate lamp. Some registration plate lamps may be fitted behind the number plate. Some mopeds may not have a registration plate lamp.

4.7.2 Compliance with requirements This inspection applies to all motorcycles fitted with front and rear position lamps. Registration plate lamps must operate simultaneously with the position lamps.

4.8 Rear reflectors

4.8.1 Condition

This inspection only applies to the single obligatory rear reflector required on a solo machine (two on a motorcycle combination). Motorcycles require one red reflector aligned to the longitudinal centre line and positioned to reflect squarely to the rear. On motorcycle combinations, the sidecar will also require a reflector fitted towards the outer side and positioned to reflect squarely to the rear. Rear reflectors are not required on motorcycles not fitted with front and rear position lamps or have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked. Reflective tape is not acceptable as a substitute for a rear reflector.

Defect Category (a)

A rear registration plate lamp throwing direct white light to the rear. Minor (b) A rear registration plate lamp or light source missing or inoperative: (i) in the case of multiple lamps or light sources (ii) in the case of a single lamp or all lamps. Minor Major (c) A registration plate lamp: (i) not securely attached (ii) likely to become detached. Minor Major Defect Category (a) Rear registration plate lamp does not illuminate simultaneously with the position lamps.

 

So it needs one then. Bummer
