Pain in the arse or worth the hassle? I'm just putting a spec together for a new car and I'm down to either Sapphire Black or Mineral Grey. The dealer and the Mrs thinks black and it's currently on the configurator in that colour, but my head is saying grey. Lets just say I'm not overly into cleaning, I don't mind it and generally do a decent job, but I don't enjoy doing it. I had a few people at work saying that black cars are a pain in the arse and they'd never have one again. Then I've got the Mrs saying grey's a bit bland. To be honest I don't mind bland, if it's easy to keep clean and doesn't overly draw too much attention.
Depends on how you feel about the dirt. I've got a black A3 and it's not been washed for about 10 months...dirty brake dist encrusted alloys...I dont care. The bike on the other hand...that has to be very, VERY clean.
Hi DF. I sense that you've been around long enough to know that one MUST defer to the 'Mrs'. For me, it really depends on the kind/model of car, for some look really great, whilst others can look like a sibling of a taxi. I recommend considering the cleaning a secondary consideration. And then, I guess you should weigh up who spends more time in the car - you or your wife?
My car is metalic black. I brought my car new and always wanted black. When it is clean and the sun shines it looks stunning. So that means that to keep it looking stunning it needs washing every other day. I would not have a black car again. It seems to look dirty very quickly, but that is just my two pennorth
I've emailed the dealer back and I've swapped it to Mineral Grey. I like the thought of it in black, but I just can't be arsed with washing the bleedin' thing all the time.
I've had 2 black cars and never again. They look great when the paint is clean and in good condition. Get em dirty, scratched or swirled and they look crap. They do seem to get dirty faster too.
Blame Henry Ford for starting the black car craze! If only he'd known of HRC colours then, WOW, the sales would have been limitless!!!
Last car was black. As others have said. Looked nice when clean. Looked awful when dirty. And it was dirty most of the time. Never again.
I've about ten new black cars, and four black bikes, all Hondas. Just about to buy another black Honda. If you CBA to keep it clean don't get one. But they are great on a sunny day, when clean.
I've got a grey scirocco and it looks dirty after around 3 weeks daily use, so not bad tbf. My old black a3 used get washed every week, sometimes twice a week looked great when clean tho.
This is what the new motor will/should look like, now I've just got to wait. I think it looks OK in grey.
Funny you should say that, the "Comp" version is going into production in August. Should be some decent discounts about in 12 months time.
