Evening people been thinking of converting my rr6 into a track bike I will be upgrading the brake sect but was wondering where do I start, do people use the original faring or buy race/track faring. Any help or links for parts would be great. Cheers
Plenty of track guys will help, but for the moment, most find cheap used ones or buy Chinese fairings, thereby allowing them to keep originals when selling the bike.
If it’s going to stay a track bike leave original fairings on til you crash. Converted my rr5 after crashing and it’s had 3 sets since then. If you don’t crash you’re not trying hard enough, ask Mad Matt........he knows
Was thinking of just using the original ones for first few track days. I’m guessing just tape up the heading light? Or disconnect it so the light is not on.
Bad idea. It will cost you a fortune, you'll spend all your time fettling with the bike and buying up all the bits to go track riding with. You'll end up with a trailer or van on the drive, spare wheels & tyres all over the place, spend a fortune on fuel and your wife and kids won't remember who you are as you spend more time going out on track days than you do at home (apparently). Other than that, it will be the best thing you ever did
I bought mine as a track bike, definelty saved me money as opposed to converting a road bike but depends how far you want to go. i'm a tart so I wanted the fancy suspension, wheels etc etc. . I went the other way and also put it back on the road with cheapo chinese fairings so i can ride to the track. grand plan would be to have it as just a track bike again. My ZX-7R was pretty cheap, I just picked up a cheap race fairing on ebay, put decent brake pads in, put some good road/track tyres on and stuck a second hand Ohlins Shock in the back (ZX-7R front end is mint but standard shock was a bit rubbish) and that was it. If it's going to stay as a track bike you can remove all the road stuff, change subframes etc, but if you think you'll put it back on the road I wouldn't bother. It's worth getting decent race fairings if it is track only as they will crash better as they tend to be a bit stonger. I think my chinese ones would shatter to bits Plenty of people do them on their road bikes, most modern bikes have decent suspension/brakes now.
I second that. Get a motorcycle trailer, they are not that expensive and are really light so easy to tow around regardless of what your car is.
I’ve got an old VW Scirocco and it would ruin the back end putting a towbar on so would need a new car to get a trailer. Not sure if they ever came as an factory option. Might have to go trailer route as missus doesn’t want a van on the drive, and with a van my mum/dad/sister/friends would prob want stuff shifting/collecting every weekend.
Not if you bought a detachable one. I just bought second hand Wesfalia detachable towbar on ebay for a nearly new 3 series after changing my car and it only went for £102.
Don't think any of the companies make a proper one for them anymore. Back in the 80s they did a couple of kits but they're really hard to come by now. Nothings impossible but it would be a faff. even with some of the proper ones you had to chop the body kit a bit. There are a few Universal kits on ebay but they don't look like they would fit very well. They do pop up very rarely on forums now and again. Have to keep an eye on German eBay too What trailer do you use? one of those motolug ones would be good for me storage wise due to space on the drive.
There's loads of fold away trailers, Motolug being one of them, who also go by the name Bikelug. Mine's a custom built one. Detatches from the axle, although I tend to slide it down the side of the house as is.
12 years of buying all sorts of road bikes and full on trackbikes, buying a full on trackbike is more cost effective as someone else has spent the money on it. My last two bikes have been road bikes and I have just run with road fairings but they do get marked in transit etc, if it’s a road bike and you put it on a normal trailer just pray it doesn’t rain the spray from the car wrecks the bike. Have a look at mine in for sale section it can get addictive.
