Hi can anyone give me advice regarding Akrapovic megaphone slip on exhaust on my 2015 blade and if it will pass its first mot with it fitted or to remove and replace with original? I have the baffle but does not make much difference. It has no markings to say not for road use but is very loud. Many thanks Nath
It can depend entirely on the tester. Mine just passed with a Racefit Black Edition fitted We actually discussed the noise level thing and although there exists a ruling about an equivalent bike with OEM exhaust my tester wasnt aware of it!
I've the megaphone too with the baffle in and my old Leo vince gp with baffle out sounded a little bit louder and always passed. So I'm expecting the akra to. But I always use the same friendly garage, as like hitch says it can depend on tester.
As far as I'm aware It's left to the discretion of the tester whether it's deemed to be too loud. Provided it's fitted securely with no leaks and it hasn't got markings stating not for road use or words to that effect you should be ok. Never seen them using calibrated noise testing equipment.
Quite right, Hitch. The actual ruling is here: https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/manuals/m1s07000101.htm As others have said, it would just about have to be a 'straight through' system to be rejected. Most motorcycle testers will be aware of aftermarket exhausts and their noise levels. It would be a very pedantic tester to insist that the levels are commensurate with an OEM system. For your own benefit, Nath, I'd put the baffle in, just to show that you're complying as best as possible with regulations.
Nige's doc is very good reference. look out for leaks and the marking saying "not for road use" otherwise from a noise point of view you should not have to worry
I have a RaceFit Black edition (with Growler end and dB killer inserted) and got refused as soon as I turned up for the MOT, even though I just rolled up idling, no excessive revving etc! Took less than 5 minutes to refit the original, just one bolt and cable tied the flapper cable to secure it. (2014 SP) Returned within the hour to pass MOT. I prefer the way the bike rides with the original exhaust installed as well. (No Power Commander fitted). May leave it on or look for alternative slip on as it is too noisy for where i live
Also the back of my boot sits on the pipe of the RaceFit. I didnt notice how much this changes my position whilst riding until I refitted the original!!
What was the reason for failing? Excessive noise, not original equipment, not for road use etc etc. It’s down to the tester at the end of the day.
Presumably an old fogey who got out of the wrong side of the bed. (And before the wise cracks come in, I don't test bikes!)
I am a big fan of the look of the racefit but the sound does get to be hard work. I have since made up a perforated baffle similar to the db killer but a little longer and with exhaust fiber glass bandage round the outside, I was surprised how much it reduced the noise , It now has more bottom end does not make my ears bleed, there is a downside, the garage door used to open when I arrived home as they could hear me form a mile away, I now have to open it myself
I've purchased a couple of these off eBay if it's any help: (super cheap, too) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universa...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648
That's great thanks. May purchase the long 60mm for my RaceFit and pack with exhaust wadding as a final attempt before I sell the RaceFit. Don't like the note on the description that says reduces deep note sounds! Trying to find info about modifying the original exhaust, cut it open and remove wadding or modify an internal chamber slightly. Already kept the flapper open which is great until your above 60mph and then there's no exhaust sound!
There's a member who's done that with an RR6 (I think it was, but definitely an 'underseat'). Cut open the muffler, ripped the guts out of it and welded back together. Supposedly sounded magic. Might be @tuktuk or @thewiz . Pay no attention to that. It's the Chinese translation for: 'Make bike quieter'.
Mine was the other way around, I had to modify the bike to fit the exhaust! Pain in the arse all the same.
Its akras full titanium factory system, aka flamethrower * I should add, it is made to fit the 08/16 bike but for race use only. Fitting to a road bike was a bit of a pain.
