hi all, I have noticed a tiny weep as in a dribble on the right hand side engine case of my 2014 fireblade, I took the fairings off to have a closer look. I found a lot of dirt and debris between the gear box and the head gasket. Do you guys think it’s a dirt build up or the gasket is leaking? Any help will be greatly appreciated
To me, it looks like a minor weepage. I don't mean to be a smartarse, but clean it and then monitor for a few days. You'll soon know.
Yeah I gave it a good clean last night and I will run it over the weekend see what’s happening, there is no dirt now to soak up oil if present so surely It will be easier to tell if it’s oil? Is that gasket a big job?
Can you maybe take a couple of pics of yours? I really don’t want to start stripping it if it turns out just to be dirt I have cleaned it and will take the bike a good few runs the next few days
I tried to take pictures now, but I can't seem to get a good angle for it, because no matter how I place the bike now, due to the angle of the sun, there's always shadows, also smartphone camera doesn't really cope well it really bright spots and really dark spots in the same frame. I'll try to do it tonight in the garage with a decent camera. P.S. - At first glance, my bike is was dirtier than yours, but that's just probably due to the fact that I ride no matter the weather, and there's really loads of dirt in there. Going to take the time that my bike is without fairing at the moment to really try to clean every think as much as possible.
Let me know how you get on I had a friend look at mine tonight and he recons keep an eye on it but he reckons it’s dirt
This is the best I can do... Guess I'm just bad with cameras. Like I said, mine looks way dirtier than yours.
Keep an eye on your coolant level and also check your oil for any signs of contamination just to be safe. It could just be a bit of dirt.
Cleaned it all two days ago and went out for less than 30 mins tonight stopped had a look and it’s weeping from the head gasket at the corner where the engine meets the gearbox. This isn’t a big leak (weeping more like) but this could be the start of the gasket failing. It’s to go to the dealership tomorrow and I have to leave it. I have 6 months warranty so hopefully that covers it. Is it a labour operation? Things like that play on my head that it might never be right.
It's a major labour operation if it is a head gasket, or even a cylinder block gasket. I'd think in the 6-hour region. I am fairly sure that warranty will not cover an oil leak on a 10-year-old bike. They'll quote the 'condition for age/mileage' defence).
It’s not ten years old it’s 4 years old and has 6 months warranty left on it which I got with purchase.
Sorry Ryan. Confused myself when we were talking about 2008 which was actually Fictitious bike. However, I'm still confident (with the greatest respect) that warranty will not cover what would be diagnosed as a minor oil leak which would fall under 'wear and tear'. Warranties are provided for under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and 'wear and tear' is a specific defence. Whilst I do hope the dealer WOULD rectify, my negativity in this post is based on many dealer experiences of their weaselling out of any repair they can. Cheers!
In my experience, dealers are pricks when it comes to warranty work. You always get shuffled to the back of the queue and any excuse to deny your claim will be found. If they don't find a reason to deny it, the work done will be second rate and take far too long.
