This has just happened to me last week. Lower oil breather sprayed oil out when this happened on down-shifting. Don't know why? But the oil looked like it had very fine flecks of metal in it. It still clicks through the gears, but the rear wheel turns freely when in 3rd gear. There's no oil in the air box and nothing thrown up through the bell-mouths. So the top part of the engine... may be okay. Anyone experience this before?
When I took my bike for its suspension set up the guy showed me a blade 3rd gear which had shat itself. Said it's a common problem and they are weak. He had replaced it with a nova gear which from what I've heard is what most go for after a failure.
In fact, 3rd gear has it's own page. http://www.novaracing.co.uk/ProductHondaCBR1000RRReplacement3rdOutputGear33T20082014.html
I had same issue with mine let go on back straight at silverstone and 1 of the tooth off 3rd gear shot out the top of box casing . Put nove 1st and 3rd gears in, new casing and made a huge difference. Nova all the way
It's on the cards. I'm a bit worried about the amount of oil that came out. It initially looked to be from the breather which means either my ring has gone (painful for anyone) or the bores have been proper damaged. Now you mention casing... I'll know when it's apart.
Pretty sure. Without the engine running - clicks into all gears and back wheel is engaged... except third, where it just turns without any resistance.
Dosent sound like the actual gear has gone, shoukd really still engage evwn with missing a couple of teeth, unless its cracked in half which mine did have from 1 side to the other
I'll get the bike back this weekend, then the fun begins seeing whats what. I'll put photos up of the damage and repair options.
I was planning on changing mine on my trackbike as a preventative measure after talking to a few people who have had them let go, is your engine reasonably standard or is it tuned up? Is it a complete engine strip down to split the cases on an 08+ Blade?
My motor is stock internal, running quickshifter and power commander 5, full exhaust. If riding hard on track 3rd will let go on pre 10 plate models . My bike has only done 1800 from new. Its a regulation in certain championships noe that 3rd gear is upgraded if using the blade cos its so commen
Mine is also standard with PC 5, Akro can and quickshifter. It only had 12k on the clock but had been tracked quite hard for the last 4k of that 12. Not started the repair work yet but found a small bit of crankcase sitting on top of the casing when collecting it from No Limits. This is where the oil must have coming from. If the damage is limited to this (on the casing) then it is a weld to fix. Luckily, there is an alloy welding specialist near me who can do this for not much money. Engine will be popped out next month for a proper evaluation. I'll take a few photos of what I find.
Anyone have any clues as to whether the quickshifter might have contributed to these probs, or has it been a problem in general for hard-ridden 08s - 11s?
