I've long been considering having my wheels in black.......my first option would be powder coated, but is paint a good option also? I've had a few sets of car wheels powder coated in the past and always been happy with the finish but if you get a chip, it's normally a big one and difficult to repair. On the other hand will paint do the job better or does it flake off/ mark over time with tyre changes? If anyone's had any experience with either and pros and cons that would be great, thanks!
Safest bet might be to ask a tyre fitter who does heaps of bikes. You'll certainly get a definitive answer from him or her!
I've had wheels on bikes powder coated and painted. I much prefer powder coat. I have the wheels on my old track bike powder coated, they had the tires changed 20 times a season and not a single chip. It all depends on how well they're cleaned and prepped before they get coated and baked. A reputable shop should be able to do it so it lasts years.
I had my VTR wheels painted 8 years ago and they still look like new. I must admit I do polish them from time to time (sad)
i also ground all the writing and casting lumps off before they where sprayed and it also makes a very big difference who you get to fit your tyres. I will only have one person fit mine I`ll give him a plug, steevo at seastar motorcycles Norfolk.
My tyre guy is someone who I've used for years and he's very articulate so no qualms there! (Quick plug....Matt at BTS in Sale)
I've got painted wheels they lasted well, but after weights are taken off the lacuair has lifted a bit
