Well OK just found the above thread makes for scary reading - Important Notice - Please Read If You own an ABS 2009 Onwards Model
The reason Honda modified the ABS ECU was for the issue where the battery would be drained in minutes of parking due to certain wheel manoeuvres, and even with the ignition off the ABS solenoids stayed fully powered. There was not enough memory on the original ECUs to upgrade them, Honda changed the ECU on my old 2010 for this reason, the brakes will still s**t with the new ECU
I have had the exact same problem . Was sitting on the bike , rolling it backwards , the engine was not running . When I pulled the front brake lever , the lever went all the way to the bar , no pressure at all .
I had some other scary ABS problems on my Honda motorcycles. Honda didn't care. The dealer had no clue to fix the problem. Honda even didn't answer my complaint. The solution for me was to change the brand. Problem solved!
I have a 2010 abs model. I bought it with 8500 miles on it 2 years ago and now it has 21000 miles on it . I have a friend who works for Honda , so thankfully I have not had to pay dealership servicing prices. I have endless problems with the ABS . The ABS light will flash on all day , one day and not at all another day. A big problem is . The brake lever feels solid just before its about to fail , then all of a sudden its pulls back to the bar , locking up the front end . Then the ABS light flashes and I have to switch off the bike and restart it , to stop it flashing . Its started flashing in slow traffic , when I have applied the brakes . Sometimes I have to re start the bike and use the rear brake first , if I don't the light comes on again . I am constantly getting different biting points on the front brake lever . My latest issue is under heavy braking it doesn't seem to have the stopping power it used too. In fact the other day , I had to do an emergency stop . The lever went really hard , I thought the ABS was going to fail and the lever would pull back to bar . It didn't . I released the lever and pulled it back again . The lever would not pull in as it should . I missed the car but overshot into the middle of the roundabout . The bike seemed fine braking at slow speed but terrible at high speed. Its just been one thing after another. I have had the system bled twice in 2 years . New pads and discs. I have just asked him if we can remove the whole ABS system. He has told me that its in my head now . I have lost all confidence in the brakes , as every time I use them , I seem to get a different feed back through the lever. I love the bike to bits but I am running out of options. Also if I remove the ABS and was involved in an accident . would my insurance be void
That’s some mate you’ve got there buddy, I can see that he has been programmed the Honda way, that’s their response to ABS issues. 2 bits of advice, 1. Get a different bike 2. Get a different friend. There’s plenty of good ones out there looking for others.
Good answer lol. I have started to look at other bikes . The more I look , the more I see that every manufacture seems to have ABS issues. I enjoy the occasional track day and they all suffer with brake fade after a few laps . This is my first bike with ABS and I really hate it. With the other bikes. Brembo master cylinder , braided lines and I could feel exactly what was going on
New friend required mate. Get rid of the prick who values his company more than your (And my) life. And give him the finger for me too. Not sure why you mention him, unless it's for the ridicule... Because they appear to have done absolutely nothing for you.
after my issue i found it altered my riding as i would brake alot sooner incase of an issue . its always in your head once you know its a common fault
I am sure it is. And for me it would take the whole gloss off riding if, in the back of my mind, I would be wondering if I might experience the problem. I am still a 'one finger on the brake lever' rider, but it wouldn't matter shite if the damn lever's going to pull back to the bar.
You might get a good deal on a 2018 just before the 2019s are released. Shame is you'll probably suffer buy P/X value, and private sales would be slow also save for bikes that are competitively priced. I actually tried to buy a Repsol off the forum about 8 months ago, but the seller didn't appreciate my buying style. Not in the market now though. Got no room!
Haha leave some bikes for the rest of us . I jumped ship in may to a Bmw . Couldn’t pull myself to buy new Honda as the dealers wanted nothing to do with abs problem, shame . But I will still get another 2006 model when money lets love the under seat model
Ah, sorry, I had read that, and that you've no regrets. Yep, the 06 -07 is the pick of the crop. They continually pull good money too. My 04, with all the bugs that were later rectified, is tucked away on SORN. You've just encouraged me to go and take a look at it!!
Hello Everyone on this thread who has had this issue has my sympathy. Thanks to Pete1987 and those of you who have obviously spent a lot of time and effort on trying to get Honda UK to account for this. Some of the accounts I've read about how Honda has treated this are truly atrocious. I am another who made a mistake in buying an ABS Blade. Honda's customer service seems to be just as bad as it was for the rest of you. I have been told that I must pay for the full system bleed (£335), carried out by the dealership with the help of Honda's master technician. If that doesn't fix it, then it's £1,738 for a new modulator, £1,655 for a new modulator assay front valve unit, and £504 for labour. Total £4,243 for a bike I bought last year. Issues started with just over 3k miles on the clock. To say I'm pissed is an understatement. If anyone has the contact details of a manager at Honda, I would appreciate it if you could pass them on. So far I've only been able to have a one way conversation with a woman who trotted out what she'd obviously been told to say, and clearly didn't have any fecks to give. My Blade is really only my second bike, moving on from a 19 year old CBR600 which didn't miss a beat in the 6 years I had it. The Blade was big purchase for me and I couldn't have been happier with it until this. Now I don't really even want to ride it; it's impossible to ride with the confidence I used to have, for fear of brake failure when you need it most. Name: MCL Model Year: 2014 Reported to Honda: Yes- reference CRM:0425002463 Taken to Dealership: Yes Description of fault: While riding at speeds of approximately 40mph or lower, ABS fails. The front brake lever suddenly loses power and quickly moves back towards the throttle and ABS light flashes. Releasing and reapplying brake restores some power but brakes are still underpowered and ‘spongy’ (presuming complete loss of ABS) with inconsistent braking point. Normal operation appears to resume after the engine is turned off and back on again. The issue occurs when the engine is hot (over approx 100 degrees and, I believe, only when the brake fluid reaches a certain temperature). This year it's happened countless time, and most days, on every single journey. Turning the engine off and back on only clears it for minutes or even just seconds. Additionally, on two occasions when maneuvering the bike from stationary facing uphill on a slope - with the engine off, a complete loss of front brake power, where the lever goes back to the throttle until releasing and reapplying. Description of work carried out: Diagnostic Fault Codes: 5-3; 5-1 Problem Resolved: No
Sorry to hear your having all the ABS issues. I can't offer any help other than to say you're setting yourself up for a massive disappointment if you think Honda are going to help Drastic I know, but if it were me I would be looking to out the bike and replace with a non-ABS model
