I think one would have to be VERY isolated from news and the community to not be aware of that. With the high profile 'Mardis Gras' (not spelt wrong, I refer to the plural) it would be difficult to believe that any sectors of the community have not seen these flamboyant parades of leather, feathers and rainbows.
