Im going to my favourite city in a few weeks, for a week. it must be ten years since I last went, the tram was still a large hole in the road, and Grassmarket was being repaved. Im stopping on the royal mile this time, going in the car, but with no intention of moving it until its time to go home. I have found some interesting tiny bars to visit, and ill go to the castle one day. I think ill go to a museum this time too. Does anyone have any good places to go, things to do that arent necessarily standard tourist things? Il be taking my cameras too, and that always makes me search out the grotty bits, and ill be disappointed if I dont find a load of swastikas on a Wetherspoons!
Alright, I'm based around the area. The museum is really good, also free entry. Surgeons Hall is worth a trip (another museum) but not free, worth the entry fee in my opinion. If your based on the royal mile then The Devils Advocate is a nice small bar, very good food as well but pricey (good picture opportunities at night down the ally the pub is on). Scott monument is always worth a walk up, again, good photo opportunities once at the top. If you'd be willing to make use of your car you can go park down Crammond and walk out to the island when the tide is low, old gun turrets etc still in place. Also, South Queens Ferry, can get a small boat trip our to Inch Comb island, old turrets there as well and a good half day spent. Can walk over the Forth Road Bridge from there as well. Moving to the outskirts you could go park up at Flotterstone Inn, from there walk up past the reservoirs and over into the Pentlands. Some good walking to be had if it's your thing. Anything else, please ask
I was up there for the rugby about this time last year, Angels with Bagpipes in the old town is worth a look, the food was great, and if you like whisky, then the Whisky Bar in the Balmoral is a good place to empty your wallet.
I've only been to Edinburgh twice, first time I was completely shit faced whilst on a stag do and only really remember the lap dancing bar. The second time was just last month but it was for a wedding at Edinburgh Zoo Mansion House so didn't really get to see much of the City. If you want to blend in though and maybe make some new friends.......I'm more than happy to lend you this for the week!
oh, that reminds me, anyone know a good cafe that does pancakes, smoothies etc for breakfast? A Spoons breakfast wears thin after a few days
Not been to Edinburgh for about 6 months. Cafe Klaris on Morrison Street did good food, excellent bacon butties. Also Bread Meats Bread on Lothian Road near the Filmhouse Cinema does some fantastic burgers for Lunch/Dinner.
If you're looking for cafe I'd say make your way to Bruntsfield, absolutely spoiled for choice there, cafe everywhere. To get there walk to the meadows then through bruntfield links. Can't go wrong
