Anybody know how much weight can be saved with a 520 race chain & Sprocket conversion ? Is this ok to do on a v-twin with a genuine rear wheel 136 bhp/ 75 lb/ft ?
Not a whole lot of weight, although with wheels, discs, tyres, sprockets and the chain, (not to mention inside the motor basically anything that spins), it's all about the weight that is saved during it's rotation. I'm sure there is a formula or equation, or something fancy and technical that explains it precisely, but essentially, anything that spins, has a rotational weight, in that, if you save a few grams at a stand still, those few grams will have a much much larger effect when it starts to spin. This is why lighter wheels make such a big difference to braking, accelerating, and changing direction. As for is it ok, someone will confirm, but i'd say yeah... I use 520 on my 179bhp blade...
I've got one on my blade and its fine. Just make sure you get decent sprockets as i had two AFAM's and they were total crap and caused massive chain vibrations which in turn scratched up the swingarm! I've also got carbon wheels so can't really confirm the difference when running stock wheels and discs.
I wouldn't bother to be honest. A in line 4 has a lot of power but a v twin has a lot of torque and that's what eats tyres and chains. I have an SP 1 and he blade and driving both of them the same way the SP will eat the tyre at twice the rate of he blade.
For the road, i'm with Speedytwin. Better things to spend £120+ on. If you need chain and sprockets anyway, then fair enough, but it only really comes into play when you're racing and every little helps. Although since being on here, i've honestly been amazed at the amount of dosh people are willing to spend on already good bikes to just ride on the road!! Not 'dissing' it one bit, it's great to love doing it and everyone works hard for their money, but i'm sheltered from it and don't encounter many road riders really, and it was an eye opener big time!
We all have more money than sense on here, well most of us, well some of us, well actually just two, sorry I mean DAN But seriously I think most of us would give our right arm to do what you do, we just want to feel that connection, even if its just getting the bike that little bit closer to race spec or a tiny bit better so we can enjoy the occasional trackday, I may be wrong or I may be talking purely about myself but you only live once and if you can spend money on the things you enjoy its money well spent I wish you the best of luck in the coming season like I said before your info on here is great as your looking from a different perspective and its great Now im off to price up full ohlins and some carbon BST's lol
I don't mean it in any way other that good mate! It's always nice to buy bling!! Some people spend their money on old furniture, plates with the Queens face on, fishing, whatever, and cool people buy stuff for bikes lol. I was just surprised how much money people really do spend on bikes! I'd forgotten what the price list was like in the Demon tweeks catalogue, and it's scary!!! Nobody should die with money in their bank, and the person with the most toys when they die wins lol.
I know if i got all the things i really wanted i would be bankrupt and divorced The one thing I do like about bikes is the bling is still worth a good price second hand if you get the right gear, so when you put your bike back to std before you sell you recoup quite a bit and someone else gets to enjoy it. I like to look at it as leasing the parts, shame the wife does not see it that way lol
I like how bikes can bring together every corner of society and completely level it all out. You could be on a 600k and end up best mates with someone on 12k, where you only met and through bikes and non bikers would most likely be in the same positions but never cross paths. You're not a bank manager or a bin man, or a CEO of a massive company, you're a biker, just like the dude next to you.
When my finances are good again I'm stashing it in the gun cabinet. What she doesn't see won't harm her.
