My 08 on an 09 plate will be due its 3rd service and MOT in June ( Its done just over 10k and maybe have a further 1 to 2 k come June ). First, how much can I expect to pay at my Honda dealer ? and second is it going to make much difference when I come to sell it if its not got a full dealer service ? . If I dont go down the dealer road there is a guy who has his own bike business i was at school with who i could get to do it . Thanks in advance for any help .

Do it yourself, save a wedge of cash and buy your missus a nice meal with the savings.

I can only say I was told between £170 and £270 for my 1s year service.

I have no idea if the 3rd year is a biggy

Buy the parts from Honda keep the reciept for proof and do it yourself.

Its only changing fluids and filters nothing difficult at all. Get yourself a decent manual and its like painting by numbers.

Do it yourself and save the money if its out of warranty, keep receipts though. Anyone buying a bike will know if it has been looked after when they see it. Just because it has a service stamp does not make it a better buy. Dealers will give you the book price no matter how many extras you have or stamps in the book.

    3rd or 12K service is a minor 1

its the 16k service that will shaft you . Book says Valve clarence check and re shim where needed . I paid well over 300 for this on my 600 and it didn't even bloody need any shims . Any future buyer will want to see that it has been done thou

I have done the shims myself Dan. If your a resaonably confident DIY mechanic it is completely possible to do the check and any shimming yourself. It sounds harder than it is, its not brain science or rocket surgery after all haha LOL !!!!!!!!!!!

The check is quite easy but the actual shimming if required is quite abit more labour, plus the cost of any shims so can be expensive if done at the main stealer , and its when you can mess thinks up if you get it wrong so care is needed.

I agree with megawatt, unless you have the good fortune to be near a good dealer you have confidence in and can trust, I would always prefer to do it myself not just for the cost saving but as Megawatt rightly states you know its been done correctly. So many times big name dealers have got things wrong or damaged something in my own experience.

Got a price from Honda Grangemouth , £160.00 as this is an interim service .I also asked for a price for next year which is 4th year/16000 miles and would be £315.00 . Do these sound about right ?

Sounds about right yes and quite reasonable compared to other main steelers.

As said I'd possibly have the 16000 done by a dealer for piece of mind but this one I'd defo do your self.

I had this quandary when my k8 gix reached two years old but having worked in garages decided I'd do it myself for piece of mind!
