Guys, I'm after a bit of advice please. Mate of mine has asked me to fit him a new chain, but having never done one which requires a riveting tool, I would value your recommendations please. P.S before you say take it somewhere else, I want to have a crack at it.....can be that hard can it
I've got one of these which does the job https://www.mandp.co.uk/products/km500r-did-chain-cutter-riveter-571522 - not cheap though! You will also need some calipers
I've got this one... https://www.motorcycle-road-and-race.co.uk/whale-chain-breaker-and-riveter Works pretty well
Please learn from my experience. You may be tempted to buy a cheaper one. I've purchased two so far. I wish I'd just bitten the bullet and bought a whale or a proper DID one to start with. The first one I bought was a DID knock-off. It nearly sheared off whilst I was riveting the chain. The second was a Sealey (I think. It didn't line up properly in any case). As far as chain tools go. Buy cheap......buy twice (or 3 times in my case).
Many thanks for a he responses guys, I'm thinking the D.I.D one looks the strongest, so that's perhaps the one I'll go for. Do I need to measure the thickness of the link as I compress it or does it do it itself?
I think the info with the DID says it is only for DID chains - but probably because they want you to use DID chains. This is from the Honda workshop manual :
Don’t use it to break the chain, Use a grinder or file to grind the river down first then use the tool to push the river out
