I have just learnt on another forum that Honda uses JIS screw (Japanese Industrial Standard) which many of us might think are ordinary Philips heads. It turns out that they're not. I have always used Philips without issue. Anyone else aware of this? I'm struggling to respond to this delicately, but I guess it's all to do with having the right size shaft to fit the slot. I mean, a sloppy fit is bound to lead to problems with rounding off and distortion. For most applications the difference would be unnoticeable, but I guess it does no harm to have the right equipment.
I didn't know this until a couple of years back when I was struggling to unscrew the seat mounting screws. I had been using pozi's for almost everything, the I noticed the little play when using them and discoverd about JIS. I have been getting away using philips since but with caution. Nigel you mean the right head to fit slot. The shaft will alway fits, its the head which makes the difference
Learnt this a few years ago when James May was dismantling and re-assembling an electric guitar on a BBC2 programme. Never bought one though.
Fair call. I've mainly been in cleaning mode for the past few months (since fitting Chinese fairings to an RRB) so my tool useage has been rather infrequent. All I know is that I grabbed one by the shaft just yesterday, because I was particularly interested in the different head shapes and sizes. As I have only ever handled Philips head, (I don't know what number but it was a long one) I had no idea the Japanese had set about designing and patenting their own smaller and more pointed head. Anyway, I am glad to have ordered a set and cant wait to wrap my hand around its contoured blue shaft. Ah, no, that must be 'handle' rather than shaft. Nevertheless, I am going to grab one and screw my wrist off practicing the JIS technique.
I bought a set years ago. The only time they ever made a difference is on the seat retention screw. That bugger needs the right tool.
It is only now and again you actually feel you have a screwdriver that fits a phillips/pozi etc. Why can they not agree on one and stop doing the rest. We may need a parliamentary petition, once we get so many like 17 million, they can do something or just ignore.
Yes that would be great and if those above agree then it will happen. if they don't agree we will have to keep voting until they get the right result
Found this out rounding countless screw heads on RC model cars, Tamiya Kyosho etc. Apparently Phillips is designed to slip when it reaches a certain torque. Tool wise I buy Vessel for JIS, Wera for PD and PH, torx etc For what its worth I dont fasten the seat down, never have!!
Just received these thanks to this Thead https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/153550534281
