Does anyone know if we still have to comply with EU laws relating to number plate size and position on motorcycles? I’m guessing that all rules will stay in place until somehow or if they are changed

There are places now that sell smaller plates that meet all the legal requirements. You really need a 5 or 6 digit reg though.

I doubt there will be any rush to change the laws. I’ve been alright with the plate I got but would like to go with something smaller but that would probably get the unneeded attention

From what I've seen our roads are largely lawless nowadays. Traffic policing is pretty much non existent and most people just do what the hell they like. Going about my business I consistently see people calling/texting on mobiles, speeding through 30 zones, running red lights etc etc. Nobody gives a shit and theres nobody there to stop them. I've never been pulled over for my smallish plate (7x5 I think) but if I was I'd definitely be asking how many people they've pulled for the above offences I've just mentioned in that day because it must be like shooting fish in a barrel when the traffic police do venture out looking for these folk, they're everywhere.

Agree with you 100% but you know if they stop you that most police officers don’t give a shi* about the other drivers and just you as that’s who they have stoped. A lot of police officers have been reasonable on how they have dealt with me but there’s always a few who have to take it too far.

I've just applied for my private plate and haven't swapped it after my bike was nicked. I've bought a full size plate as i cant be arsed with the hassle of being pulled over for it. Why give them a reason to.

I'm joking ofcourse, if a copper pulled me over I'd be as meek as a church mouse, take the ticket and probably thank him for it. :(

The size, colour and font of the plate is and never has ever been down to EU law it is the Road Vehicle Licencing Regs which are UK regulations that apply.

You're forgetting the speed cameras. They work like the clock and tax law abiding citizens

Apoart from the fact that most chief officers do not consoeer traffic policing front line policing even though they make more crime arrests and see more dead bodies than any copper in any other department, bear in mind that running a small plate is the modern day equivelant of not displaying a tax disc.

No tax 99% of the time led to other serious vehile/driver offences being detected, in particular no insurance and no driving licence.

A small plate is saying to the coppers "Look at me, stop me if you dare you can't touch me!" but those that get stopped in many cases get done for more than just the small plate not all I grant you but many do), and whilst there are other offences being committed by other road users, the copper only has one pair of hands and it is your small or illegal plate that has drawn his attention to you.

Asking how many others they have pulled over is a red rag to a bull. The favourite was "Why are you not catching real criminals?" I did, but I was a traffic cop and it just made me check the vehicle even more thoroughly and waste more of the driver or riders time, so if you use your strategy, then don't complain when you get delayed longer, you choose to commit an offence, why should you be exempt?

You are right that you may not get pulled that often if at all, that is the luck of the draw, but...........

The size of plate, chracter size and fonts are prescribed in law for a reason. If you feel that you are beyond the law, then good luck to you.

If like some you decide to use a white on black plate as some Harley's are currently doing, (unless it is a pre 1975 vehicle) then you run the risk of getting nicked and locked up for attemting to pervert the course of justice as white on black plates cannot be read by speed cameras and there have been a few arrested recently.

    So take your pick.

I can only speak from the other side of the fence and tell you why and what could happen.

If you choose to igneore the regs, then if you get caught you have nobody to blame but yourself even though you may feel it is a minor and insignificant offence. Nobody id forcing you to break the law.

Sorry to sound so cynical and matter of fact.

Yes I understand all that. It was a flippant throw away comment as you can see from my later post. For the record, he can waste as much of my time as he likes, the smaller plate is all he'd find and that includes the standard of riding. :D

This is totally false. Suggest to unscrew your head from a little britain country that you can hardly see on the map and understand that there is a huge world out there.

Lots of states in the US don't even require to have a front number plate.

Not just the States. Takes few weekends away in various EU countries to understand how retarded UK road system is: both rules and roads (especially surface). Moreover the most annoying thing is that on average number of death on roads is the same or sometimes even more.
