As above, want a deterrent, mainly for the garage more that anything (locks not listed on my insurance) I don’t want to spend loads, I was looking at Oxford 3D lock thing, can get for £30 but according to MCN it offers no real protection. not prepared to go the other end of the scale with the big 22mm chains etc, I don’t live in a high risk area and bike isn’t unattended for long periods of time - except in a locked garage with CCTV coverage. ideally I would like one that is 1.5-2m long for ground anchor in the garage and if possible fits in the tail of the bike but I’m doubtful due to length required what y’all using? ta LP
Don't think you'll find a chain that fits in the tail of the bike that's anything other than a token gesture in which case stick with the Oxford. All chains in that price bracket will be a similar quality and strength and offer the same protection times i.e. how long it takes to cut. In my opinion if your looking to get a chain, get one that does the job which sadly means visiting the other end of the price range. Names such as Almax, Abus and Milenco, otherwise i don't see the point if you can't rely on it. For casual security if I may, I use an Abus disc lock that I can fit in the tail.
Thanks @MrB that is what I thought but felt worth exploring if anyone has found a hidden gem, may go for a tracker at that end of the budget
I'd still look at the Oxford if it's going to be more of a visual deterrent. Still takes time and makes noise trying to break it and may just be enough to make someone think nah bugger can't be bothered, not worth risking. Better than nothing. I always choose physical security over alarms and trackers, alarms are/can be a pain in the arse and trackers, yeah can see there worth but doesn't stop it getting nicked in the first place. I appreciate if they want it no matter what you do they will have it. Just got to make it as hard as poss so ideally they target a less secure option.
I'd make the garage as secure as possible first. Is your garage door decent? Has the door got a bollard? Get that right and you can leave the keys in the bike with your helmet and gloves sat on the tank for them. I'm not a fan of trackers, if my bike went for a ride with someone else I wouldn't want it back.
I'm on the look out for a new chain myself Funnily enough, usually I have an Oxford monster at the moment.... Had it for years. I combine that with a Oxford Omega Thatcham approved disc lock, again had it for donkeys and it still does the job. I some times put that in the underseat storage but I wouldn't put a big heavy chain in there mainly as there isn't any room for it but also these chain weigh a tonne it's its a decent one!! I'll probably get another Oxford to keep things uniform in the garage but I have many different brands saved in my ebay watched list!! But again I agree with everything @MrB and @CharlieR85 have said, especially the points made about physical security over alarms/immobiliser or trackers, they're just battery draining horrible things. Also making the garage as secure as possible,I have a sunken ground anchor, tamper proof electric roller shutter door, I plan on putting a barrier across the inside of the garage door
Something like this but I want it on the inside, no chance of the bikes being wheeled out through this, and they'll have a fucking right job on to try and lift it over if they do!!! I'm thinking on the inside because if it's on the outside...... Yes it's a visual deterent, but also may let thieving sub human scum know that there is something in there I'm trying to protect..... Thoughts?
Thank Paul, Charlie and Mrb my garage is safe and secure, never had a bike chained up before but can never be too careful I’ll up my budget to £100-150 and take a look of what’s about, I have a Oxford 3D disclock (and a bloody heavy duty one too) so will stick that under the seat.
I'm using an oxford monster chain and a ground anchor for the blade. Have an abus heavy duty chain and lock too with an oxford disc lock used for carrying with me. Not a high risk area and my 1 year old granddaughter could probably break into my garage as the locks not that great. Personally I couldn't be arsed with that barrier but an internal version is far more aesthetically pleasing as opposed to that thing stuck on the front of my house. Carrying around a decent chain just isn't practical, they are just too heavy so for garage use only.
I don't Liam was talking about getting one of these ...... Good video though, might look into this. At least I know now to have a decent hammer drill at the ready!
The almax chains are great. I ride with one of the guys who works for them and it's quite a process they are put through to get them to be as tough as they are. Only a small company but they have done great things for bikes in developing these chains.
I've got one of these, just nudge it and it goes off, it is fairly loud aswell paid £20 for mine from J&S https://www.oxfordproducts.com/moto...and_padlocks/oxford_screamer_alarm_disc_lock/
Trouble is depending on who wants your toys, do you really want thugs breaking into your house with yourselves and the kids, threatening you while your naked, then the kids waking, screaming aswell, but you dont know whether its because there is thugs in the house or they can see your weiner......... I'm very much of the opinion if they want it bad enough let them have if. I have chains & disc locks, even a abus granit, but when I'm home very rarely they are used. When I'm out oxford screamer works a treat and fits under the seat
And has for trackers fucking rip off to save yourself £20/30 a year for insurance, have to subscribe and there is no guarantee you bike will be found !
For garage security I've had an Almax Immobiliser, Squire lock and ground anchor for around 15 years and they still look as good as the day I bought them. Before that I did have an expensive Abus Granit, until I watched a few Sold Secure chains get destroyed in seconds on YouTube. I'd buy another Almax chain without a second thought. I think it's highly unlikely that bike thieves would come into the house and front someone for the keys, it's just not worth it for a single bike. If it was part of a haul of a few bikes or bikes and a car, possibly.
