Simple question but I'm guessing there is no simple answer.
Im looking at a new Shoei helmet but the one I like is now discontinued and can't find my normal size. I can get one that is one size smaller than my usual so how are they made? Is it likely it will slacken off to suit like most or do they tend not to have much give in them?

    Thanks as ever folks :)

Mine doesn't have much slack, and that's a year on, ryding everyday.
Not worth the risk, cost wise in my opinion, if it doesn't fit you or ends up being uncomfortable.

Thanks mate. Well I did wonder about trying it and if it didn't slacken off then I could buy a new liner and cheek pads in the correct size? Assuming I can get them of course

I'm not sure on changing the liners as I've never done that before, but sounds plausible.

I guess I need to weigh it up - discounted hat = less cost than the current models (just). New liner £81, new cheek pads £76...I just found them online. It works out a bit more expensive than the current model but it is the one I like, and they might be ok and adapt to my bonce?

I was more hoping for someone saying that they are normally bigger made o_O:D

Hi Jimmy, I think the 5 or 6 helmet sizes are actually only covered by 3 "shell sizes" and the rest of the sizing is down to the pads/liner etc. If you are going from medium to small you might find that the shell size is the same and you could do what you're proposing and change all the inners to make it fit. However if you are going between sizes that don't share shell sizes then you might have a problem.

I bought a Shoei GT air from the NEC 2 years ago and had a custom fit at the same time included in the price. I couldn't decide if I was medium or large (these 2 sizes have different shell sizes). The medium felt snug round the cheeks but it was pinching on the forehead, the bloke pointed out that if its pinching my forehead then that won't go away no matter what you do to the inners. I put the large on and it felt more comfortable around the forehead but too loose round the cheeks. He changed the cheekpads to get them snug and 2 years later it's still the most comfortable helmet I've ever had and it's still perfectly snug.

I was changing from Arai because they don't do a flip down sun visor, have to say the Shoei was a better fit to begin with and has remained an excellent fit. I wear my Arai still now and then for work and it's not a patch on the Shoei for comfort.

Good man @CharlieR85 the one I’m looking at has 4 shell sizes so I’m nearly almost maybe just about sure I will get it as my normal size has the same shell. :):)
I might sleep on it and decide then find it’s sold haha

What lid you using at the minute Jimmy?

Really depends on your head shape as well, your current lid might fit you like a glove but another brand will be a completely different shape for your head.

I have a HJC rpha 10 in XL which is almost near exact fit as my Shoei X Spirit 3 and fit my head shape exactly.

I'd be more concerned if you go a size down it may put pressure on your forehead and you'll end up with a headache after every ride. I'd always go up a size to try and eliminate that problem then fill your cheek pads out if possible. I wouldn't bother, it's all about forehead fit for me.

Not a problem for old Hamster cheeks @Lozzy! :D:D

    Love you really x

    Morning Paul,
I have a Shark Spartan just now but have had a few different ones over the years but never Shoei. My size has been consistent over the years and have a rather little head :) I have just got too much time on my hands as I haven't been able to get out the same as all of us with the crap going on. I don't really need a new hat and would like new tyres...but its the getting out for them...it's literally 40 miles each way to get that so screwed on that for a bit.
I have been working from home for the past 10 days and had a half day yesterday so 1230 the leathers were on, backpack at the ready and away to get essential shopping (milk and butter). I got as far as the patio door, looked out and it was pissing down!!!! I was willing to brave the cold here in the Arctic but bugger taking my lovely clean bike out for a 2 minute run of a mile to Asdas to have it filthy.
Went in the car instead, without the leathers ;)
