I’m looking at swapping my chain and sprockets out as a set. What’s the debate on the difference between the 520 and 530 chains? Any discernible benefits or downsides? Currently eyeing up Gold Tsubaki 530 Chain, Renthal sprockets (16-43) and Gold DID chain again Renthal sprockets in standard guise. drop a tooth on the front? hmmm open to any advice and opinions
Can’t really comment on 520/530 or gearing changes as no hands on experience. Tsubaki is a pita to rivet as it uses solid rivets unless you have appropriate tool, DID uses hollow rivets easy peasy Renthal sprockes are good too but once the HA layer is gone the teeth wear super quick
The 520 is a slimmer chain and I’d like it to last a bit more than a race distance I jest of course Looks like the DID route at the moment unless anyone else has experience of a different brand? Anyone know anything about Supersprox?
I'm using tsubaki and supersprox combo. 530 pitch and I went -1 +2. As said above you need a proper rivet tool for solid pins. I had a garage install mine as didnt want to mess about with the front sprocket nut either.
I’ve used a 520 Chain mate that came of a bsb blade and I had 3k on it when I wrote the bike off but still had miles in it. Lighter, spins up faster and if you go for the higher end they do look the nuts lol
Supersprox are trick too, used it with a tsubaki, can’t remember but the combo did a lot of miles and the sprocket had little wear. Thought id use it again on a new chain but decided otherwise. also one of them(renthal or supersprox) was quite hard to align as the laser tool did not sit flat on the sprocket, I’ll check tomorrow.
I’ve just changed mine to gold DID and afam, haven’t actually used it yet due to some global pandemic. the front sprocket in particular looks quality. It cam with a oginbene chain tool which is actually really easy to use, chain pressed and riveted in 10 minutes! also look at oginbenes silent sprockets they actually work!
I’ve seen the afam sprockets but never heard of them. Performance parts sell them. i’ll look into the oginbenes silent sprockets (WTF)! Are they cut different to standards? I know i’m going to look for aubergine sprockets now it’s in my head won’t get many miles out of them
Lol oginbenes like oem have a rubber ring that reduces clatter, fronts are easy to get, rears can be a little harder. Not used on the blade but the rear sprocket can be a pain to keep clean
Ek 3d gp chain 520 pitch with superlite steel sprockets shaved almost five pounds off previous set up with driven sprockets and DID chain in 530 pitch. Definitely best out of three chains i have ran. Factor in for a good chain tool if you are going to do it yourself. I wouldnt go anymore crazy than -1+2 as the acceleration will be much quicker and dont forget to program with a calibrator.
Lot's of benefits in terms of reduced inertia for a moving mass when you reduce the weight. You mentioned the 525 is a slimmer chain. Does that mean it flaps more sideways while trabelling between the front & rear and what effect would it have on the wear on the teeth?
Like you said in another post the sprocket cover is a PITA to remove, don't know why it was designed that way. Probably the same design engineer that thought is was a good idea to put the ABS unit between the radiator and headers!
It's a pita because of the projection on it that shields the radiator hose and you also have to deal with the shift linkage. The billet piece i have is much thinner and has a cut out provisioned the hose so with just two bolts.
The sprockets also have to changed with a different size chain to keep the movement within tolerance. Technically you could put a 530 or 525 chain on a 520 sprocket but there would be to much side to side. The 520/530 designation refers only to the space between side plates on the chain which is also the thickness of sprockets. So a 520 chain as its pulling across sprockets has less surface contact area on the rollers and teeth which makes them where out faster. If you go the 520 route just check the break strength to make sure it is close to the oem DID 530
I believe the all 2017+ Fireblades come with 525 chains. May have even been 525 previous years as well.
