Hi guys, Been out today on bike for a ride with mates and brakes on my standard 2015 blade are pants. The lever feels spongy and travel on lever is almost to bar even when you are parked up and it's all cold. Is this normal? Best way to rectify this, is it just braided hoses and pads? Or do I have to replace master cylinder? Cheers Luke
Is this ABS or non ABS? Has the brake fluid ever been changed? May be worth bleeding brakes and running new fluid through as a start point.
Replacing the M/C should be a last resort. There are many tricks with the brake fluid to try first, such as reverse bleeding, bleeding the M/C, and leaving the brake lever pulled in overnight. Failing that, just make sure the callipers are clean, not leaking fluid and the pads are a good brand with a decent bite. Then if all else is lost go with the M/C.
All of the above. If the fluid 5 years old then change it. If its still fresh -ish then pull the brake on at home and put a cable tie over your brake lever overnight so the system is under pressure. This can often force air bubbles back to the reservoir and leaves you with a firmer brake the next day.
I've tried all above and fresh fluid motul rbf660. Think I may try some braided hoses and some sbs race sintered pads see how they go. Its non abs one btw
Also make sure all the brake disc buttons are free, they should have a little bit of lateral movement. edit. That is the discs should have a bit of movement.
They are all good fella. Never had a bike that's felt like this. I know people say they aren't supposed to be good but didnt expect this. Thing is they stop and have stoppie power just a lot of travel on lever and spongey feeling . Orderd some.hel braided race lines so hopefully these will help .
I need to get the brakes sorted on my 16 SP (ABS) same thing lever goes half way in when you pull it in a second time same with back brake bit of a hit it and hope with the foot. Will rebleed and clean and go from there.
It's not cracking is it. Hopefully some braided hoses and pads will do the job. Apparently can also replace with an r1 or r6 master cylinder?
I swapped to HEL braided hoses on my 2015, make sure you order the race setup (1 complete line to each caliper) and take care with the orientation of them getting them the right way round etc. I found they did improve things but it wasn't night and day. Although my lever never felt spongy and it was never in danger of going back to the bar either. I'm quite happy with the brakes on the blade, I find the initial bite isn't as strong as some other bikes but they do have good power. Are you bleeding from the master cylinder aswell when you're doing the bleed?
Haven't done anything on this 16SP yet so will start with just bleeding the current system and changing the pads and go from there, will bookmark those HEL lines as well for later. The handle never goes to the bar though so I think it just needs a bleeding & pads and go from there.
the disk buttons (bobbins) allows for heat expansion between the rotor & carrier. I have also read they can give you brake wobble if they have no clearance
