The only checks you can do is look at the paperwork to see if there's any mention of the error codes and bleeds outside of the required service ones.

It's not pot luck. ..it's a dodgy shit system and I should know...

Ask for evidence that the fluid has been bled within the last couple of years. If it hasn't or they can't provce it, then use that as a negotiation tool on the price as it's at least a £200+ job to get it done. Mine had an ABS issue for some time, but getting the system properly bled following Honda guidelines fixed the issue (so far) for me. I know others haven't been as lucky, but doing regular fluid bleeds definitely helps from my experience.

exactly this, I even put the ABS in diagnostic mode to see if errors were stored (which there were). Told the dealer about them and they promptly dropped the asking price by several hundred quid.

Bought the bike at a bargain price, deactivated the ABS sorted!

Mine has been ok up to now, I have had the calipers stripped, new hel brake lines, re bled all working ok, It must be an issue with the ABS system rather than just bleeding

So you got fed up with problems with your system and removed it from the bike or deactivated it or what? Saw you on some previous posts saying how much you liked your ABs, was just about to follow your suggested bleed process on my 2011 that's started having issues.

You pull the lever, it doesnt move (its like pulling it with a block of wood between it and the bar for a split second) then the ABS freaks out and goes into some sort of bypass mode. Now at this point you've been squeezing the rock hard lever fairly hard without thinking about it, so when it goes into bypass and you actually get brakes, they bite...... hard..... like seriously HARD, stoppie inducingly hard at about 50mph in my most recent case.......... Leathers needed a bit of a clean after that one...

When its working ABS is awesome especially in the wet and the occasion when you find you panic brake.
Bleeding does sort out a lot of the problem but I found myself bleeding every few months rather than riding the thing. Took the decision to disable the ABS never looked back.

Disabled how? Removed calipers from system and direct from master cylinder to calipers, removed fuse?

    Hi everyone,
I have bought a CBR1000RR SP 2015 about 3 months ago, and after several rides in heavy traffic I notice that something wrong with the brake (sometime the lever feel soft just like sponge inside the brake system) , everything I search on Internet take me here - So I think that temperature is the reason cause this problem … And my question is if I replace DOT 4 brake fluid by using DOT 5.1 brake fluid, do this issues disappeared ? Thank you everyone.

Is there any record of the brake fluid being changed in the Service History? If not, it will be well overdue replacement (previous owners may not have had the fluid changed due to the very complicated bleed procedure - from what I can remember it is something like 5 hours labour at a main dealer). I think there is something in the owners manual regarding inconsistent lever feel at low speed being a characteristic of the system - the one I had was inconsistent...

    is it from a dealer?
If so, get them to sort it asap
Any fix they do manage, will only be temporary.

At slow speeds the ABS is disabled anyway, so it may just be this that you're feeling as there is a difference in the lever feel. If it also happens at higher speeds, then that's likely to be the ABS issue discussed here.

Very charitable madmac. Unfortunately the low speed brake failure is a classic symptom of this ABS model.
It's a pity V12 wasn't a member of this forum before he bought the ABS Fireblade

I think previous owner do not replace the fluid yet - I should try to complete full bleed brake fluid like some old topic I read here - Hope the brake work well after full bleed. :(

    It is ABS mate

First time I hear that at low speed the ABS disabled on motorcycle mate, the previous bike of mine is Z800, the brake work very good in 4 years 6 months I ride it, ABS save me at least 4 times.

It is from a dealer but in my country, they just warranty that the bike didn't get crash only. Anything else about error of that bike you must check carefully before buy it (can't test ride if you don't pay 100% $$$), after that they say "goodbye" and don't care anything about you and your bike.

Is it just a bit spongy or is it a full back to the bar soft, If you are ok with bleeding brakes a simple try is to just make sure master cyl is full and does not run dry, then bleed both calliper's as normal. ABS brakes do not tend to be as solid as normal
