I asked the independent I use today how much for the £16k service and after quoting me £400 last Summer he said between £500 and £600 today. I called my local dealership and they quoted me £599 for the valve clearances, spark plugs, all fluids and brakes/calliper checks/clean. What has everyone else paid for the 16k? I also have read so many times not to bother with valve clearances at 16k and get it done at 32k so in two minds over it.
Take it the valves haven't been checked before? Personally unless I was a regular red liner and rev the bikes bits off all the time, I'd leave the valves - hondas are pretty renowned for being made well and tolerances good. From the receipts I got with my bike (07) looks like valves were checked around 32k and reported as on tight side of tolerance. I checked at about 45k and could have got away with it (probably) but as I had it all off changed all exhaust and one inlet shim - all nicely in tolerance now not tight! Probably won't check them ever again now!
I've no idea but very much doubt they have been checked. The previous owner I would hazard a guess at as not being mechanically sympathetic and kept it outside in the rain so had the chain and sprockets done as the chain was rusty I'll probably have it done for peace of mind not knowing how it's been treated by previous owners or any of the service history to indicate it's been done. Is £600 the going rate? Looking back at previous threads one from 2014 people were saying £400 so 7 years later i'm guessing £600 isn't way off the mark especially as that's a main dealer?
I check my own but paid my local mechanic to replace the 3 shims ,,,,,, £145 + £19 for the shims . The bike was pre stripped down to the cam cover . He normally charges £225 just for a check on an unstripped bike then per hour to replace shims then a recheck If you go to a main dealer ask them for pics to prove they did do what you've paying for I've heard of people paying for work that's not been done ,,,,! Not saying their all like that
Would you mind telling me who the Honda dealer is? I am thinking about getting my bike's valves checked this year as I have not done so yet and I've ridden it 43,000 miles (from new)
Thanks yeah I will want to know it's been done as I don't trust any garage when it comes to spending that amount of money! Sure it's Crescent in Southampton. They didn't ask for the year of the bike so guessing it's a fixed price.
@Sp0oner @edderby let the forum know if they are or not in tolerance when the check is done .....if you don't mind
Will do, I won't get it done until next month as that's when the loan bikes are supposed to be allowed to customers again so will contact them nearer the time.
I had an issue with valve checks, I put tamper markings on the rocker cover, these were not broken after the valve check, I complained to trading standards but they said they were busy. I then thought I would do it myself rang the garage for some shims only to be told they do not have any, so obviously had no intention of re shimming.
I went with an Independent recommended to me from a colleague/ when I had my 2010 done last year at 16k it was £653, but £150 odd was for the 4 Spark plugs. At 16k the manual states Inspect, replace if necessary. I decided to replace regardless. So call it £500 if you didn’t replace the plugs. They took pics of the engine and when the bike was stripped, I’m happy that the full work was done. my clearances were fine and no shims etc were needed.
I am glad I do my own servicing, It makes your eyes water the amount they charge, then you never know if it has been done right. Any issues just find a mirror and give the bloke a bollocking
I wish I could however I am the least mechanically minded bloke on here - just adjusting the chain is still an event for me even after 27 years of doing it! I couldn't even do an oil change let alone start taking the engine to pieces I did once take the front panel off my Fiesta-ST to repair something cracked behind it but that felt like open heart surgery and much youtube watching to get it done and it still took me twice as long as it should have done - big hands and small gaps to get to bolts don't go well together for me so taking my bike apart fills me with fear at just the thought of it although so does spending £600 but at least I won't be left with a pile of left over bits that should be on my bike
You and me both Sp0oner. Approaching the tool box is a bit like getting into the dentist's chair. You can either handle it or you can't. Blood too but that's a whole new chapter. I can do electrics but not mechanicals. Terrified that if I do something wrong it'll cost more than the job in the first place. The local dealer I use takes a video of the work as they do it and send it over so at least I can see what's going on, even if I have no idea exactly what they're doing.
Fuck a duck, how much? If anyone wants to learn how to do this job when this covid shite is done with you can bring your bike over to me and we'll do it together. I'll only do though if you really want to learn how to do it and not simply watch and get the job done cheaply. I'm only an amateur mechanic but happy to help anyone learn if they want to.
£150 for 4 plugs...holy cow! That’s £90 more than they cost to buy, what did they do, rub them with fairy dust. ?
I’ve no idea on the plugs does seem a lot of money having just had a google. this is what’s On the invoice,
Couldn’t have put it better myself. I’ve got most of the tools and stuff and have tried. But I’ve stripped too many screws/bolts/threads saying that, I’ve just installed a set of crash bars and installed some spot lights on a bike and it didn’t go horribly wrong . I’ve been watching the YouTube tutorials on repeat for the last few days. took far longer than a pro would do though
