So i went for an MOT in the UK and the tester tried to jack up my 2008 cbr1000rr under the belly pan using the exhaust pipes , i freaked out and shouted no chance buddy your’ll cause some damage ..did I overreact or is this an acceptable jacking point ?
It’s the one of the places I support when lifting my bike if removing the forks, head bearings etc. but it’s counterbalanced at the rear so there is very little load on the headers, and you have to do it in the correct place. If it was just being done is a single pivot point then I would be concerned at the stress through the pipes at that point.
I had the same experience few years ago. Contacted my honda mechanic after recovering from the shock. He said done properly, jacking up like that is common and causes no damage. The downpipe / manifold is not only supported by the engine block but also where it meets the silencer. The weight is shared between the jack, front wheel and the side stand
To check head bearings, trueness of front wheel, binding of brakes... My MoT guy does it to my blade every year and I have learned not to wince at the sight now. No harm has been done and the bike's had 9 MoTs now
Makes a bit of sense i guess for headers but not so much the brakes and wheel trueness. You'd hope the owner rider would be onto the last 2.. Mines due in 50 odd days, we shall see. Last bike i had done was late 2019 on an S1000XR, did nothing of the like.
Just put my 400 up on the stand for new tyres and front forks out for rebushing. There is a calculation for the amount of weight loaded on each area against the weight of the bike, cant remember it but it make sense and it’s very low.
I've no problem with it , its one of three points of contact with rear wheel and side stand to the ground, ,,,,, with out a sky lift how else do they check the head stock bearings Headers are pretty robust, ,,,,,like @Kentblade says its about balance
