I had my stator replaced last May and only riden it less than a handful of times due to restrictions. I've had to top the reservoir up twice in that time & I've noticed fluid leaking from the gromet at the top where the cable is and my reservoir is empty. The stator was bought from m&p direct through their eBay shop. It's going back into the garage that originally replaced the stator next week to find the fault. They said if it's an issue they caused, they'll rectify it. They also said if it's leaking from the gromet, they may need to order a new stator as the gromet is attached to the cable. But obviously won't know till next week. My thinking is, surely this could just be solved with gasket sealant? Anybody else had this issue? And what would be your thoughts on the situation?
They'll just take the cover off, clean it up and replace the honda bond or the gasket, depending on what was used and it should be fine. The only other thing it could be is the grommet failing but it seems unlikely unless it was a really cheap piece of kit. Probably could fix that with some sealant too.
What type of fluid? It would be a serious problem if it was anti freeze, and more likley to be from a leak above the grommet. The reservoir being empty is unlikley to be linked to the stator.
Well it seams as though it's leaking from the grommet. They had a play around with the cable where it enters the grommet and you could see it slowly seeping from there. Plus that'll explain why my foot is covered in fluid after a ride and why the reservoir keeps draining. Turns out the grommet isn't sealed right on the cable. The stator was bought from m&p motorcycles and is an electrosport one. It's going in the weekend to be sorted.
That makes no sense. Dot4 is brake or clutch fluid, neither of which has anything to do with the stator. Which foot gets covered?
So is this on a 04-07 bike? More likely to be a clutch pipe/slave cylinder issue - clutch fluid does not go near the stator.
The stator is the elecrical charging system on the left hand side of the bike, the cover is sealed unsing a gasket bond or you can now get a normal gasket too. Inside this stator comparment is engine oil, when you say 'the reservior keeps draining' which one are you talking about, I assume it's the clutch master cylinder reservoir which is brake fluid. Pull the clutch lever in and see where it's leaking from the pipeworking.
So took the panels off the bike, cleaned up the residual fluid so I could get a proper look at all the pipes. Pumped the clutch lever a shit load of times and can't see any leak anywhere along the clutch line and is bone dry!!! And the clutch pipe doesn't run near the grommet for it to drip onto. The fluid is literally from the grommet area and down the front of the stator cap.
But what reservoir are you filling up, clutch reservoir on left handlebar? If so clutch pipe or slave cylinder is leaking - they wouldn't have to touch either. Just done mine and fitted electrosport from m&p on an 07 no problems. Assuming what's dripping on your foot is clutch/brake fluid and not oil - completely different consistency and smell - plus if brake fluid will be earing through paintwork and boot material soon!
Yeah I'm filling up the left reservoir. I've checked for leaks all around the cylinder area and along the pipe and it's all bone dry. This is what I can't understand. There's no sign of fluid anywhere else apart from around the grommet and the front of the stator
Fluid has a weird way of tracking along places and collecting, but from what you describe you've got clutch fluid leak, nothing to do with stator. The clutch pipe runs above the stator and behind the frame on the left hand side. Likely when on sidestand is tracking down and pooling on the stator. As fluid is corrosive, wash everything off with water otherwise paint will strip. On mine the stator wire is under/touches clutch pipe - so if the same on yours then is another way fluid can track down. You said it was going in to get sorted, what did the garage say? Did you have any work done other than the stator?
I'll have another look tomorrow and keep it on the sidestand and pump the clutch an see what happens. Yeah sound about the same layout as mine. The garage has sort of gone along with what I've told them. BUT didn't pick up on the fact or mention that I've had to fill the clutch reservoir up twice. I took the bike down and they looked at the stator, felt the oil and said that it's most likely the grommet not sitting right. Didn't have any other work done other that the stator being replaced.
So had another look today after work and found the culprit as to why my clutch reservoir keeps draining and why my foot gets covered in fluid....it's the clutch slave cylinder. I'm guessing it's just the gasket. But it still doesn't explain why it looks as though it's coming from the grommet. Any ideas?????
Unlikely to be the gasket, from what I remember you can take the slave cylinder off without loss of fluid. First thing to check is the bleed nipple, and/or the pipe into the slave cylinder. If they are ok, then take the slave cylinder off and check to see if the seal is leaking. My next top tip, get yourself a Haynes or workshop manual
You can get an aftermarket slave cylinder rebuild kit, they're cheap as chips, the gasket from Honda will likely cost more than the rebuild kit. Alternatively buy yourself an Oberon slave cylinder, they're about £95.
Thanks. But the 'any ideas???' was to do with why it looks like the fluid would be coming from the grommet on the stator! Got a Haynes manual and already eyed up the parts needed to sort the slave cylinder.
Others have already given thoughts and I concur - brake/clutch fluid will slide off the casing if you tend to polish it, but harder to not stick to leather boots or rubber grommets. Looking at the bigger picture will help identify the problem, but going back to the first post you seem to have missed the clues and concluded it was the stator replacement that was the issue.
