OK so I'm a novice when it comes to maintaining a bike. I can do the basics but struggle when it become a little technical. I've noticed a crack in the bit that holds the front shock to the wheel and also olds the break caliper. Can some one tell what the name of this part is or if I can get a replacement. Spent hours trying different discriptions
    I'm riding a 2006 1000rr.
    Thanks in advance.

It should come off but I wouldn't like to try.

Watching that, in theory it can be change and might not have to strip the whole thing down. Now to try and find the replacement part

I'm sure I saw Wavy Dave do it on one if his videos.
Have a look through there you might get lucky.

When my stanchion (the chromed bit) got damaged, JHS were able to remove the bottom bit, and fit it to a new stanchion... so it can be done, with the right kit.

Keep an eye out Ebay and Trackday Addicts... always bent forks on there with good stanchions.

    Also try David Silver Spares

One thing to watch for is the grub screw in the alloy lower, to lock to the stanchions, it damages the threads as it just screws directly onto the threads
so when you unscrew it strips/damages the threads from the alloy bottom
Next time I would give it a light spot drill to remove the damaged threads

Cool thanks for the advice. So I need to strip the shock before removing the stanchion. I've only seen videos of complete strip downs

When Honda replaced these when the bikes were newish, they just changed the bottom component. It was a quality issue.
My RR6’s cracked within months when it was new.

Time to order some shock clamps then I think. The shocks them self's are perfect so didn't want to replace everything if I didn't need to. Been trying to find the gold coloured stanchion to match the other but not found many

Thats why I stripped mine I had the stanchions titanium nitrided, I got 2 bits of wood and hole sawed between slightly smaller size as the stanchion you can then clamp in the vise
you need some tube for unscrewing fitting in lower axle hole and heat as they are also locktited
they are tight to get off but worth it

It would probably be cheaper to buy another used fork leg than buy a new bottom bracket.

New RHS Fork is £240, LHS is £295 (no idea why they're different prices). You get the chrome section of the fork for that as well as the bottom piece it seems you need. If you're using a garage to fit them they may even get a trade discount with Fowlers, so it'll come in cheaper still.

Used is a good shout but I'd proceed with caution. My RR6 suffered a crack in the same place, as have several others (if you spend a bit of time googling it). I've no idea why or how many are affected but just check and double check the one you're buying is sound if you go down that route. I went with the new option personally, wasn't ridiculously priced IMO and you get peace of mind that way.

Honda had the same problem with the 929 and fixed mine under recall way out of warranty. Check if there's a recall for your bike before you do anything else, you never know.
