I had forgotten how much fun this forum is

I'm going to Berlin soon, and am thinking about my next holiday, which is going to be a budget affair

I have been to Budapest and Vilnius, and I really like the culture, Vilnius was really good, but not even remotely cheap.

Have you been to anywhere like that, city breaks really, not taking the bike, just beers

I’ll recommend Prague if you promise to behave yourself.

Went back to Prague just before Covid and found the prices to have leapt up since I first went in 2014, more than inflation would have influenced, so still beautiful but not exactly cheap any more. Though expect you could say the same about loads of places even if you are well behaved.....

Hi Blink long time no hear.
If you haven't been to Krakow before it's certainly worth a visit, similar in a way to Budapest but on a less grand scale, obviously a trip to Auschwitz is a must and most hotels will arrange trips including travel and admission, the Schindlers (as in Schindlers list) factory/museum is also worth a visit but have a days break between the two. I believe the main square in Krakow is the biggest square in Europe, it's full of bars and restaurants and ideal for people watching;)

Brugge is also a beautiful place to visit and drivable from Calais in just over an hour, some stunning architecture and lots of canals, bars and restaurants and one of those busy squares that most European cities have. Appreciate it's not far East but certainly worth a visit, not much of a gay scene though.

We just cam back from Turkey last week, and it was quite affordable. Exchange rate is favourable.

It's bit further East than you mention though.

Berlin is very Nice, I stayed in the Radison and there is a huge cylindrical aquarium in the hotel lobby that reaches up to the top floor. Google it its quite something. Even worth a visit if you're not staying there and just have a drink at the bar. Plenty of places to get beers and if you want a night club, see if AM PM is still open for business!

Isn't that the same aquarium that exploded a couple of months ago and flooded the place? What have they got in place of it?

im staying in an apartment hotel in berlin, I'd have stayed in the raddison for that tank, but not much point now! I'm near Nollendorfplatz station which isnt that far from the gay bars, which, to be honest, make me really stressed out

I really like east german architecture, just about every aspect of it, the concept, the motivation, then the design and execution

Bruges sounds nice but I wonder if its a bit touristy, or rather, too polished. Budapest was really dog eared in places, it most definitely felt like a foreign holiday. I met lots of nice people, but people werent generally outwardly friendly. Lithuania, was totally different, the people I met all seemed to be proud just to be Lithuanian and everyone wanted to show us something local, it was a truly amazing place, every bar was welcoming, and we headed out of the city centre too, even the bars that were a bit like walking into someones garden shed were all good, and it was like try this local beer, or what do you drink at home, you will like this instead.

They were quite pleased that they were the first to kick the russians out, and have quite a vociferous dislike of Putin

+1 for Krakow. Went there first on a stag do and we all said this place is far too nice for a stag do so lots of us ended up going back with our other halves later that year.

It was clean, cheap and very nice. Streets aren't overcrowded and it doesn't attract hoardes of Chinese like lots of places do.

Can't speak highly enough of it.
