I was once told that it was almost impossible for a bike to be accurately caught by a speed gun as it needed a flat surface to reflect back an accurate measurement of speed and there aren't any on the front of a bike. Was this rubbish? Are the vans different in that respect?

The only time I've been caught in the past few years was by a cop on another bike who told me he followed me for a couple of miles at 1** so got a true reading off his own calibrated speedo which he couldn't do with a hand held device. He eventually "let me off" for 97mph. That got into the local paper which several pupils in my class had a field day with . Little buggers.

Very true, stealth speed cameras have NOTHING to do with road safety at all, only a stealth TAX, if they really want to slow down speeders then a very brightly coloured van in an easy to see place would be used.

Also speeding only contributes to 13% of uk crashes, meaning that 87% of craches were NOT speeding at all...

In 2022 346 bikers died in RTC's where as over 1000 people died from falling down stairs. maybe they need stair cameras ;)

Derbyshire had an unmarked one as far back as 2008. Other forces have used similar. There was one marked van up N Yorks on a fast country road popular with bikers that used to park under a big overhanging tree and you wouldn't have seen it till last minute if it wasn't for helpful on coming traffic
If I see any van parked in the usual places that remotely resembles one I slow to @PauloHRC speeds

I came across a camera van over the border in Yarksha on the way to Hawes on a straight piece of road mile n half long no houses no gateways just dry stone walls . National speed limit , I was doing 68 when I looked at the speed (running a 55 profile so Speedo is very close to real speed ) anyway I went past him thinking I can't have this not knowing if I'd been caught and waiting for somethig in the post spoiling the weekend :( so a mile later I turned around and went back to the van and parked up and knocked on his window and asked him if he got me , he asked how fast was I going so I told him 68 , he replied, you got away with it ,its set at 70 . Outside a school in a 30 I'm ok with but on a straight piece of road out in the middle of nowhere, that's just a money maker

Thats not a Stealth Camera Van , thats Lozzys new camper van that she's touring the Yorkshire Dales in dressed as Nora Batty!!

She tries to lure young bikers (like me) into the Van by hanging her massive nickers out of the back window but apparently it only works on the older fellas, ain't that right @Selmer50mark !!:D

Whoever told you that is talking out of their backside.

Back in the 70's when I first started on Traffic and we used a device called "Muniquip" which was the original hand held device, there was some truth to the story, but even back then it was tested thoroughly by the manufacturers and the myth was disproved.

The issue used to be that if you had 2 vehicles close together, because a signal was sent out from the gun in a rotating direction and would then hit the vehicle and be sent back in a counter rotating direction, it would sometimes bounce off another vehicle and give a false reading, hence the reason why if there was any potential issues, the speeding target would be given the benefit of the doubt unless the speed was that high in which case we would revert to expert evidence of opinion (which as traffic cops we could/can do) and book them for speed reckless which does not require a recorded speed. (similar to doing someone for dangerous or careless driving)

Now they use radar and laser. It is accurate up to several miles away as it uses a dot of laser and does not require a counter rotating signal being sent out and will measure any surface regardless of shape

All the loopholes, get out of jail free cards and scams were removed and tested in court a long long time ago.

If you stand 30mts away from your bike at night and shine a laser pen at your bike, the dot you see on your bike is the reflected light the speed detector reads, but in daylight and a different wavelength.
you need to reduce the bikes reflective surfaces as this will reduce the distance that you can be detected, or you can reduce your speed :D
you will still be seen, just a bit later
