This is a 2018 RA model battery fully charged and has been on charge all winter showing no signs of issues and in addition it is the original battery. Put the battery on and went for a ride, about 40mins again all good! Came home put the blade to bed. 4 days later I go to fire up the bike and nothing!?! Battery is flat, now admittedly I didn't connect it to the charger for those 4 days..... My question is, is this about right considering the size of the battery along with I guess minor electrical bits working in the background. Or is this looking like new battery time??? Has it got a tracker (they use a lot of juice), otherwise its just the HISS that’s running in the background. If it runs fine when its been on the trickle charger then I wouldn’t rush to buy a new battery just yet.
I've got the same bike and original battery, always put it on trickle charge every time it's in the garage. The only time I didn't I had the same problem as you but I think that was due to accessories using power when they should have been idle. So could be battery life but as long as it's good to go when I need it I'm not changing it.
Thanks guys for the confirmation, have rigged up the charger now so I will take your advice and plug it in when not in use even if it's just over night as it has the charging adapter fitted. Again thanks for the quick responses
Just wanted to give my opinion. I have a 2017 RA, without tracker. I charge the battery once a month, as per owners manual. I've not had issues. If the battery is draining after 4 days, perhaps something is draining the battery!
@Saqib hmmm now you mention it!?!....The previous owner did say something about a tracking service that I could sign up for as it was all geared up for it!?!...... Can they be disconnected easy enough or is it major faff????
Tracking systems are usually installed in such a manner that they are not get easy for thieves to get to. Do you know who installed it?
@Saqib have no idea who installed it, probably the dealer when the chap purchased it to begin with. Without checking paper work I vaguely remember him mentioning Datatool!?!...Never signed up to it though. @Jay Floyd have to be honest I really not keen on doing anything mechanical or technical with this bike, years ago I would have played with it till I totally F@#£%& it up and then get my mate to sort it!!!...Now I have a LR Defender 300Tdi which requires a goodly amount of spanner time and sometimes an ungodly amount too!?!...Besides what's an APP???
DataTool supply Trackers and Alarms. If you call them, they may tell you if your bike has one installed. They will require proof of purchase (V5 or similar). It's pretty easy to do a quiescent current test with a multi-meter. This will tell you if the bike has something on it which is draining the battery. Mine will sit for 2 months and crank first time. There should be no reason why yours couldn't. I think Jay means an app on your mobile phone. To switch the tracker on/off.
Your battery should last more than four days without being on charge! Id be tempted to change if its more than a few years old. You'll never be able to trust it if it keeps happening. Best thing to do is ride the thing, that also helps keep battery in good health.
@Saqib Doh...app!!! I read it as A. P. P Pretty sure it has a tracker fitted as previous owner said he had stopped using the service, because every time he needed to move the bike he had to inform them or he would get a call checking it was him. @Barstewardsquad the previous owner put some tasteful after market bits on, AVS Levers, Quickshifter/Auto blipper, Carbon rear hugger to mention a few! You could well be right about the free tracker fitting though.
@PauloHRC Personally I too think the battery should last longer but don't want to buy another whilst I have not resolved what is drawing power.... And yes you are correct riding the bike keeps me sane and healthy too, but the wife said I should only ride when the weather is nice, so who am I to disagree!?! Plus I don't mind being called a soft fair weather rider! I done plenty in the past in all conditions!
But that doesn't help with Disconnecting the Tracker if it's confirmed to have one!?! Guessing it will need a Sparky for that little task!?! Oh such is life!
Have a look at the battery. There will probably be a wire on one of the terminals to power the tracker. Disconnect and tape it up. The tracker has it's own backup battery inside which will drain in about a day. Mine had one on when I bought it and would drain the battery quite quickly.
As Coda states that would be my thought. If I knew what a TRACKER looked like, I could hunt for it and possibly trace the wires!?! @Coda Thanks for the input, much appreciated especially after our little spat.
