I had taken my 2015 cbr1000rr out w weeks ago and when I got abput 10 mins from home iy started making a funny noise in 3rd gear. Straight away my heart sank as I know 3rd gear is a bit of a weak spot on the blades but thought it was mainly when tracked. Last week decided to strip the bike down and remove engine ready to drop at garage for them to look at. Then on weds day this week got the phone call from the garage. I was hoping it was going to be 3rd has gone but everything else is fine but it wasn't to be and I was informed the output shaft had bent and the dogs on the gears had been damaged, which is a lot more costly. New parts would bring the bill to about 2k. This meant the options were either a 2nd hand engine, 1nd hand gear box or break the bike. I scoured all breakers and every place you could think of to try and find a 2nd hand gear box in mint condition but couldn't find anything. A and hand engine was too much for me at nearly 1800 quid so it looked like my bike was going to have to be broken for parts. I'd resigned myself to this fact and had agreed a deal with a breaker to pick the bike up next monday or Tuesday. I had started to looking for a new bike which wa looking like being a 2008 r1 when yesterday I was looking on fb marketplace and what appeared was a 2nd hand complete gearbox for my fireblade from a 3k mile road bike , talk about a turn of luck. I am going to drop this gearbox off at garage tomorrow and hopefully they will say everything is spot on and and we can repair the blade and get it back on the road.My bike has done 24500 miles at minute so maybe gearbox will be better than ever lol. The only dilemma now is do I keep the blade when it's repaired or do I get rid and get a 08 R1. My 13 year old son thinks I should keep the blade . Keep fingers crossed guys it fixes it
It's knocked faith in it a bit but suppose if it gets fixed will build it back. Gearbox has only done 3k miles so should be spot on and slicker than the one that was in. I got to say I do love the bike , I must do as its longest I've ever owned a bike at 4 years in May and I've done nearly 20k miles on it
I'd keep it, I think it's just a bit of bad luck you've had as they're usually pretty bombproof. I've 28k on mine at the minute and had no issues., and I've had 50k on a previous one that was absolutely fine too
After investing in a gearbox and fitting I’d keep it and just run it, I’ve had 54k on a blade before with no issues at all and would of been well over 100k if not for writing it off.
I'm also in the Keep the Blade Crew. If the gearbox was the only faulty part and the new one is only at 3k then it's going to be a better and cheaper bet than an R1 which will definitely/probably have a higher mileage. Even if you want to get rid of it a bit later you'll not lose.
Cheers for all comments guys. Yea I think she will be staying as she has been mega upto this. All I've had to do is fit a new battery that is it.
I have mate but not sure its worth it as took qs off now and it isn't going back on so thinking it will be ok on standard one. , I will discuss with garage what they think is best
Well we finally have her back. Got the engine back yesterday afternoon and fitted it all and got it running last night. Finished the fairings and that this morning. Now just for MOT and hopefully as good as new.
