Anyone done this and have any tips to get the price down?? been quoted stupid figures on say a 106 or saxo both 1.1 engines. We are talking £3000 upwards its £2400 if i put him as a named driver if i insure it but would like him to insure it so he can at least get some NCB. There is a few companys now doing a smartbox that they fit so it monitors there speed and hours of driving etc but still stupid money for a student to pay.
Some 1.1 cars are more expensive to insure than say a 1.6 because many young drivers have started out with a similar sized car so the insurance stats show a 1.1 as a higher risk due to the amount of claims received. Glad I'm old(ish)
MrB's right. It's the 'claims experience' figures that drive the prices up for certain cars. Much to youngsters disgust, a less cool car, one their grandad would prefer, will be easier to insure. And probably better performing too.
a 1.2 renault clio grande is one of the cheapest cars to insure and also one of the least desireable but it does for me. but no matter what you do you wont see massive savings, im affraid wasting numerous hours searching through tons of quotes is the best way to get the price down
Agree with all around the car choice. But try putting yourself down as a named driver. Sounds bizzare but brought my car insurance down when I added Jo (who's have more claims and point history than me) hers down when I'm the named driver down and her bike insurance down when I'm a named rider. Don't get it, but worth a try to build his NCB
If you have a missus, stick her down as a named driver, you won't believe the difference it makes. Even more so than putting a male driver on the policy.
May sounds daft but a kit car? you can get some cheap. and the insurance is cheap. also they don't have to be lotus 7 reps like mine. Pistonheads is a good start to look for kit cars. also locost sites. many kit cars look pretty much like normal cars Also suggest classic cars, i know little about these but if you looked at a classic the insurance may be cheaper? just athought
Definetely Mum & Dad as named drivers.....if he has passed his test then do the Pass Plus course....is good for a 10% discount from many insurers......high voluntary excess can help but expect the compulsory excess will be excessive to start with..
If he's still learning, I believe Halfords (sorry Bats) do a learner driver month by month student driver policy that isn't loaded too badly even over a 12 month period.
just done the same quote and made my daughter a year older than she is so 17, because shes a girl its £1500 same quote for my son is £3400 this is on a citreon saxo 1.2, my daughter has her heart set on a vw beetle so done a quote on that 1.6 engine think thats the smallest they do? £1900 same quote for my son £6700 pmsl pmsl
Insurance is cheaper while there learners, goes up the as soon as they pass (extra premium taken)............. saxo, clio etc all have extra loading! to reduce the premium have you and your partner added as extra drivers, will reduce the premium, if you can take it as part of a multi policy............ my daughter drives a 52 plate mini one 1.6 £800 fully comp
i have been altering the dates of there age and put that they have passed there test just to get quotes, just puting my lad on my insurance with L plates its £1400
