3 weeks ago I was sat in my car, stuck in a traffic jam in Derby. Watched a mint condition silver CBR600F4 (circa 2003) come out of the sidestreet where the tyre fitters is. Sure enough, it had a shiny brand new back tyre. Rider looked a little nervous, was going very gingerly. He decided to filter along the centre line (fair enough). Then he got to a "keep left" bollard, but there wasn't room to get between it and the next car, so he decides to go to the right. Obviously felt a bit nervous about this, so opened throttle to nip round bollard and get back on left side of road soon. BIG MISTAKE! He highsided it on a straight road at about 15mph. I was surprised how far up in the air it threw him. He was surprised too, he was staggering around in shock, poor chap and needed to be walked to the side of the road. Not sure, but I think he might have landed on his head. The bike was quite scraped too. Having watched this happen in front of me, I am now going to be VERY careful when I next get new tyres as I think I have started to get a bit "yeah, yeah, I know" when the fitter warns to take it easy for a good few miles...
See peeps had this debatein a thread about it been the dunlops SS,s But as you say its easy done and happens with all new tyres!! So as you say consentrate go somewhere quiet and chill ride like a fairy for 30 miles then up pace a little till 60 miles then just go faster and faster
a mate and my brother both had recent off's on brand new tyres, it seems like tyres are getting slipperier.
I've just had Sportsmarts fitted and glad I'd read the warnings on here. They are bar far the slipperiest new tyres I've ever had. First mile or so was horrible.
I always take the bike home ASAP - get it up on the stands and give the the tyres a good wipe down with parafin soaked cloth - then wash if off with normal bike cleaner [turtle wax shampoo of whatever] - I've known mates in the past take fine sandpaper with them to the dealer to rub the tyres down before riding off. I've done this after I got spat off an old R1 just as I left a tyre dealer and ended up with £600 damage to the plastics.
I never see tommy hill with this problem and he has numerous sets a day, I wonder if the teams do something to the Tyres or just the fact the Tyres are just stickier!!!
You have got to be kidding me! Your tyres don't need washed, they just need to get some contact with the road.
thats got to be one of the funniest,if not scariest things i've read in while!!!!. just stick them on,go easy for 20 miles,no sudden throttle openings,gently lean the bike further each time,job done. on track,tyre warmers,1 lap,job done (maybe even 2 bends).
I've got to say that I've never had any problems. I just go for a ride for half an hour. Start off like you're riding around on a wet road with diesel all over it for the first 10 minutes or so and then progressively add a little more lean and a little more throttle. Seems to work for me.
I agree totally, that's my usual approach too. The thing is, this guy wasn't really gassing it hard, wasn't leaning at all and it was dry. But it was within 200 yds of the tyre place... I guess if he had ridden the same half a mile down the road then he wouldn't have come to grief. It's possible that the big stickers might have been left on the tyre (?), I don't know, but it was a very unexpected outcome from my (fairly experienced) point of view. One thing that I do now is to ride to the one (and only) local roundabout that is Shellgrip all the way around and use that to scrub the tyre(s) in, as I assume (!?) that a slimy tyre won't slide on Shellgrip.
I have sport smarts and trust me you defo need to put some heat into them maybe 3-4 miles,When new as withall tyre you need to scrub them in,but they still need to be warmed up.I had avon vipers on my R6 they wer stickey straight off the mark but lasted 1600 miles .
I bought new tyres from a guy who wiped them down with acetone which seemed to do the trick. I don't know why they don't do this at all tyre shops, it is quick, easy and seems to be effective...
Heavy rain up here all day and needless to say diesel everywere never seen as many rainbows .(Take it easy dudes)
