"There are two types of motorcyclists. Those who have crashed and those who are going to crash"

Well here I sit and I was just wondering about that. I've not really been riding that long. Only 4 years on the road with a full licence and thankfully I've never yet had an off. I've had a couple of close ones when I was just starting out and still making all of the noob mistakes but for quite a long time I've ridden along with no hint of trouble. Now I put this partially down to the fact that the traffic in the North East isn't very heavy but that aside what do you think? Is having a bash inevitable?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO RICH you said it now mate

I've been riding 5+ years. had 2 within 8 days in Jan 2007. first one not fun. The second one hurt and cracked a few ribs. Firts a Smidys the second Diesel

AS for having a off it's got to happen at some point even if it's just a light fall without any damage you the rider

You got me thinking, Who on here has been riding for 10,20 40 years plus without a accident of some sort. Not thinking dropping the bike but having a off when riding due to poor road conditions, other people on the road etc...

I would have thought not many

    That's the thing, mate :D

As a bit of an empiricist I know that my statistics of having an off are the same every time I get on the bike. Obviously the assertion that you're more and more likely to have one the more time that passes is nonsense. The law of probability states that your chance is the same and doesn't increase.

Also I don't believe in fate or bad juju or jinxing myself by talking about it :D

Well i come in to the 30 year bracket, i had a few scrapes when i had my fizzy and the RD250 but since 1984 touch wood i havent had anything, like most have had cars/tractors pull out but luckily for me have always seen it in time, had a near one with a deer once. So several miles under my belt and at least 30 odd trackdays may my luck continue.

    That's encouraging to know :)

I've always been the same, even in the car. I spot stuff coming a mile off. I can't remember the last time I had a heart-in-the-mouth moment through someone surprising me by pulling out or something.

i'm the same as you 4 years riding and no offs, but i know a lot of bikers, and going by their rate i am due one, at some point, and i am dreading it!! my planning is excellent, and if it comes it'll be cos i panic on a corner, or something round the corner takes me by surprise and i lock the wheels or just hit it..

We have already agreed, within our group of regular riders, if anyone comes off...
    1, hide the camera
2, check the rider, if all is ok (not fatal)
3, get as many pics as possible, if i crash i wanna see it all afterwards... if there is roadkill involved find a funny pic in there somewhere :D

I've lost count. Suffice it to say my legs look like road maps of Italy.

    Feckinell, Blaggers :D

Do you think that you might be a bit accident-prone?

Would you like us to bring some spare levers and controls for the Northern rideout? Just in case, like? :D

Ah, wellington boot shaped legs, eh? Still, better than my mate. He got one leg that looks like its been chewed by a shark (and thats what he tells any potential bed sparring partners) and the other leg..........well, he hasnt seen it for years. It 'fell' off when he hit a bus full on. Joking aside, the same mullocks killed his brother.

I've tried the statistical analyseses and even dabbled with paranoia to explain it, but I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not very good.

I have had to crashes in my 6 years on the road. the first was when i was 17. Locked the front wheel on gravel. the 2nd was started by diesel and then ended by hitting a salt bank at the side of the road. been grass tracking a few times also but i have calmed down a little since my daughter arrived

oh and i bought a decent bike which helped a lot aswell :)
