Well, im finally giving in and buying myself an IPAD.
I always buy my wife the new ones when they come out and i have decided to have one myself too. I bought her the IPAD 3 last week, sold the IPAD 2 to my sister, then decided i want one!
I will keep my laptop for connecting to the PCV and other things.

Im a PC man and have been for many years Giv. I have been a systems administrator for many years and know a bit about computers.
The IPAD is seriously limited compared to a PC or laptop, but its horses for courses.
I do very little dedicated PC work at home now and find i use it mainly for Browsing, 1000rr.co.uk, Ebay and you tube.
The beauty of the IPAD is you pick it up, press a button and it is instantly on and away you go.

Well I'm definitely younger so I'll have a punt. I've had my iPad 9 months now and cannot bare to be too far from it. It sits on the arm of my chair or on my desk and gives me instant access to the Internet, whatever book I'm reading, all the pdf's I need for work and reference. The workshop manual for the FireBlade is on there, all the manuals for all the printers and systems I use and install at work is on there, even the camera is half decent for a phone unit. I stress the instant bit guys. Lift up the cover and it's all there. No boot up, no connection lag, instant. A friend has just given me over 8000 ebooks for it, all of which take up a scant 9 gb of storage.

I'm not a lover of Apple generally, but my laptop battery is now slowly dying through lack of use.

Careful, my mind is not a healthy place to sync with, but, in this, we agree.

I still think the 'busa looks like an ice cream van, mind.

What the distinguished gentleman said. Best thing I have bought computer wise. The missus has one too, and both laptops are redundant now, apart from loading pcv maps to the bike.

Because a laptop is made to do and interface with many things.
The IPAD has a clearly defind use - more like a calculator really.
It doesnt have to load services and be all things to all people.
As I said before - the IPAD is no PC replacement as it cant do a fraction of what a PC can, but it is seriously good at what it does.

You'd need one with a solid state hard drive, which is, in effect like a big memory stick. They are around but at about a pound per gigabyte. So a 450 gigabyte hard drive is going to cost you about the same as the whole iPad. The programmes for tablets tend to be stripped down "lite" (god, I hate anmericanisms) versions so don't take up the kind of space full blown software, or bloatware these days, need. Everything on my iPad that I need to get by takes up about 15 gigabytes of its capacity. 10 of which is just books.

A full blown operating system plus software is going to eat a substantial chunk of expensive space on your SSD laptop before you start filling it with minxes. You're also toting around something about three times the weight and size.

Don't get me wrong, the tablet doesn't replace a computer but I do find it far superior on the move than a laptop. Faster to boot, faster to email from. I can write on it as easily (except for the bloody stupid, non extended keyboard), prepare PowerPoint presentations, work on spreadsheets, virtually everything I would use a laptop for. But not what I would use my desktop PC's for.

Although both technically computing devices, iPads and laptops/desktops are like chalk and cheese. Think of it like a Fireblade vs a Harley - both bikes with similarities and can do similar jobs, but built for different purposes.

If it's media consumption you're after (Books, Music, Video, Magazines, Web Surfing, simple Email, Low-to-Mid Gaming) then an iPad cannot be beat at the moment; if you need to do power work on it (create office docs, develop software, edit movies, etc) then a lappy/desktop is what you need.

It can! The iPad takes ~15-20 seconds to boot, which is the same as a laptop with an SSD. The iPad and laptop both go into standby/hibernation and out relatively quickly - the iPad beats it with the faster Flash memory and the optimisation afforded by having a stripped down OS that is streamlined for specifc uses.

The iPads apps mate, anything near Hi def is a nightmaire it spools up for hours! Apple blame the developers even though any other device has no problem, some footage low res is fine but the big problem is you can not select different levels of quality, fine if your on fibre optic broadband or infinity but for anything else no go.

That said the iPad is Awsome for images and surfing, only other big gripe I have is folders you can only have images one folder deep! major bummer! there are other problems but it is what it is I guess.

    Flaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaash!!!!!!

    Spit, spit, haaawwwwwk, spit.

    That's better.

YouTube is somewhat unpredictable on an iPad, at least I find it so. I'm sure that having a broadband bandwidth that, for trade description purposes should be described as narrowband, that could be superseded by 2 cocoa tins and some bailing twine has much to do with it, but Apple and Adobe's lovers tiff over Flash and it's omnipresence within the bowels of "the tube" has a detrimental effect on just what you can and what you can't see on playback.

I'm going to have a nightmare this coming week with an IPad 2.
We thought it would be a good idea as a Fathers Day present and a kind of home coming present and a thank you for him spending two months over at the villa painting and getting it ready for the market.

Sometimes a pen and paper can cause issues for him, so this Saturday explaining everything and setting him up with syncing and iTunes are going to challenging to say the least.
