Just seen this website - Motorbike Thieves | Where I captured the thieves on CCTV Set up by a guy who had his Triumph 675R stolen in April 2012. He caught the whole thing on CCTV, including the method. The bike hasn't been recovered or the thieves apprehended.
was on another forum. seems the Police are not that interested in getting bike or even cars back to owners. Another chap on Pistonheads has his bike nicked about 2 weeks ago. has a track and they know where it is in a locked garage but will not open the garage/brake in to get the bike. Amazing
But they would arrest him for breaking and entering if he tried to retrieve it, I bet! A couple of years ago, my shed and 10-15 others down my road got broken in to and 20+ bicycles were stolen (proper 2am operation). Not 1 was recovered. Took 4 calls to the police from different residents before the Five-0 eventually turned up (appreciate we have law enforcement on the site, so don't want to tar with same brush). Apparently it's the latest thing, and only started to happen when a 'known bicycle thief' was recently released from prison - but they can't prove anything because 'he's very clever and doesn't take stolen goods home with him'. Genius. All I got was a 'dear victim of crime' letter and a PCSO turned up on my doorstep with an information pack.....that contained leaflets on the padlocks I could buy from Homebase.
Wow..is that like a secure car park? Police are useless..they are busy looking for bikers with small number plates... !
When my bike got lifted a couple of years back, we had the CCTV footage of the theft from the garage area. The local CID knew who it was and I even got to see a full colour A4 mugshot of the main scrote, but because the CCTV cameras don't move then apparently it is inadmissable in court. So they knew who it was, where they lived, their previous, etc but nothing could be done. Annoying, to say the least. Footnote: the tale ended (relatively) happily thankfully, as they managed to wheel it about a mile away in a cul-de-sac and leave it there until they were sure it didn't have a tracker. It was recovered 24 hours later, albeit with the best part of a grand's damage, mainly due to them breaking the steering lock which required a new one fitting along with ignition, fuel cap and pillion seat locks. Lesson to be learned: steering locks are next to useless and expensive, so don't bother with them!
What the hell are we paying for with our taxes?? As Sam says, they would rather be out catching people with small plates or sitting in camera vans in daft places just generating revenue, rather than out doing something useful. I understand that the police are on a sort of bonus scheme or have targets to reach: stands to reason that they are not going to be solving bike thefts and proper crimes, if they can sit in a van doing people for being 2 or 3 mph over the speed limit.
I'm never sure how daft to go with security. The bike's at home all day while I'm 15 miles away in the office. It's locked in a garage and ground anchored to the floor and I always figured that if they get through that lot then there's not a lot else I can do without going stupid and keeping hyenas in the garage or something.

But they have enough funding to enforce the menial "crimes" that have been mentioned above? "Lack of funding" is just an easy get out clause that Joe Public can't really argue against. There's no defense for this policy, and I believe it is a policy, rather than a forced situation.
Easy - fit a tracker. You won't stop a pro thief from getting your bike if they have long enough, but you may well get it back once they have. Plus with BikeTrac, you get the added bonus of being able to track your own trips.
