My daughter who is not 20 until September has just finished 2 weeks Jury service, which to be fair she found interesting and useful as she is studying law. Yesterday, the case she was involved in was concluded, and when she got home she was able to talk to us about the case as she has now been discharged. Both my wife and I mentioned that into our 50's we have never been called up for Jury service, although for a number of years I was exempt because of my Police service (although I think even this has changed now). Anyway, blow me down, what lands on my doorstep? You got it. I have been summonsed for Jury service in September Coincidence?
Just luck Mate, I've never been asked. OK only 35. but neither has my mother Yet I know people my age who Have been asked twice. I wonder how they pic people for Jury service? randomly?
My understanding is that they have a computer that randomly selects from the electoral roll, which in the old days was done by hand so to speak. I suppose I cannot complain too much, got away with it for all these years. There is a chance that there may be a conflict, in that I know someone from the legal side, the police or the defendant may be someone I have had dealings with in the past. That will get me out of it
I'd like to do it for certain types of cases but others I really would not want to know the full details.
I can understand the type of cases no would want to know about. Would be interesting if you got called for a case were a guy was say speeding, 120+ on a bike, no one about and no other to injure if they crashed. Does he need to go to prison due to Speeding which is worse than killing a person by not looking where you are going in a car. And Speeding is so bad, Sorry went off one there. just got me thinking
done it once when i was about 27-28. only had to attend for 3 days in the end but found it quite interesting how it all works.
Never been asked and never will be. Thats not to say I never seen the inside of a court before tho... Nowt bad, never nicked off anyone or owt.
Ah, well that is one area that has never worried me having been required to give evidence more times than I can remember over the past 30+ years. As an expert witness (which is the capacity in which I give evidence these days) I actually find it easier than in my days in the Police although not as humorous as I used to take the piss out of defence solicitors and barristers because of some of the stupid questions they used to ask
I got called to do it the week I turned 18! Then again when I was 35. Great experience and would love to do it again.
Done it once.... two weeks and an total eye opener, until my '' stint '' i had thought that most of the general public were reasonably intelligent and fair minded indviduals... not so now ! Two simpler cases you could not have given us, but half of my two jury's were total idiots who would have found it difficult to find Hitler or Stalin guilt of anything. I think it depends less on the actual cases and more on the '' team mates '' you get on your panel. Good luck with it but don't be surprised at the types of half-wits you meet.
TC ... Did you used to post on another CBR Forum?? at 33 i've never been called, but wife of the same age has already had 2 or possibly 3
i got called once, but i asked them to re-schedule as i was out of the country on a business trip on the selected dates (tickets were already booked).. never heard back from them with new dates...
