    What is too small?

I have until this week had the large original 9X7 no plate on the blade but bought a 7X5 but this seems bloody small. normally go for a 7.7X5.5 which has niot attracted to much attention.

What size plates are you lot using and any issues with them if non legal size?

All the rest of my plate os legal letters etc..

    just thought i would ask

Recently fitted a 7.5x5 & haven`t encountered any problems with the plod, when i initially received it i thought,`balls` it looks to small, but comparing it with a chap at work with his plate which he has exactly the same size & his has been on for a couple of years , he hasn`t had any grief either.( there is a sexual innuendo in their somewhere , but i`m not going to stoop that low!!)

I have a 7 x 5 and filter through traffic past cop cars every morning and they never stop me. I think you only get trouble if you have the 7 x 2 plates or ridiculously small plates. The fire blade has a real small back end so the smaller plates are not as noticeable compared to for example my mates 08 zx10 with has the biggest arse going and it makes the plate look tiny

I use 8x6 with writing underneath the reg so makes it a little smaller, haven't had any issues at all for years.

Have a mate that was stopped the other day doing 100mph but as his plate was sooo small the police car camera could not pick it up so they gave him a telling of and a non endorsable £60 fine.
He says he is keeping it on for sure now as £60 a year or so is well worth not getting points on your licence.

I have always had a 7x5 on all previous bikes. My local MOT chappy said if he could read it from 15 yards and its square he would pass it, however he did say that his approval may not satisfy the police?
Now in March this year I took my Brothers R1 for its MOT and he failed on his 7x5 plate??? I pointed out that he has been passing this size of plate for years why the change? Its would appear that the powers that be have been putting presure on him to follow the guide lines to the letter, he did apologise which helped a great deal!

I and at least 4 of my mates have 7x5 and we have yet to be stopped. If you get pulled I'll pay your fine?

    Yeah right, drem on

    Legally Situation is as follows:
You can measure your plate and sizing and cut your plate to suit - anything less than this and plod could take exception.
My plate is modified to the legal minimum as described - this as I'm sick to death of being pulled and attracting fines...no more !!

I get my plates from here:

Motorcycle Plate and Bike Plates Maker | bike-plate.com

at the min legal size (according to them) of 9 x 6.5, but with a black border (to match the bike) and UK logo for overseas trips, it looks smaller than it is but with no problems with getting pulled.

Mine is the legal minimum for the registration detail so it's 7" wide x 6 1/2 " high
It's an 11 plate so will be the smallest width plate you can have - height is fixed by legal font size and border spacing..
Having said that, I'll post up the plate from my 851 in comparo to the blade plate - an I never get pulled on the 851...

I got my plate from here...

    Pro Reg Plates- Show Plates

You make it up exactly as you want and get a decent preview of what it looks like. You can put some small text at the bottom of the plate like Dan has.... I put "BS AU 145d" here which should be displayed on all legal plates!!! That should confuse plod!!! Clever huh! :)

...oh fast delivery and quite cheap too! :)

Mid week you'll not be bothered by the pigs as long as your plate is readable, on weekends it's revenue collection for the filth so any plate 1mm less than legal will get you a PCN!

I have just got myself a new 7 x 5 as said before looks a bit small but when you view from say 20 yards looks fine .Do any of you know what the right tool is to say chop a bit off the bottom of the standard plate (The bit with the bike shop name at the bottom)

There isn't a right or wromg "plate" size, it all depends on how many letters/numbers you have, letter size is 64x44, gap between leters is 10mm with an 11mm border, the less letters/numbers the smaller the plate can be IE if you could afford one letter then a legal plate size would be 88mm high and 66mm wide!

Cut the perspex with a hack saw then run a steel rule along the edge to smooth it off.
