not to mention the iPod 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen, 2 other ipod touches that the kids have, Airport express in every room, Apple TV.

    Sad, i know.

Thing is, they work seamlessly together. Stream music in different rooms, watch movies, push to every device via the cloud, Dropbox, photos, surf the net, Sat nav on the bike and in the car, skype and facetime, and very reliable. I was a diehard windows user since '95, but frequent crashing and blue screening, and crappy OS from vista and others... I tried Apple. No going back for me, although gaming is far better on a PC and the choice is better, but I'm not into that since Ghost Recon.

Nice dude, but your missing a MBP and a Magic Trackpad ;) lol

The thing I like is they all work so well and easily together. iPhone is just a mobile version of this all :)

Got the trackpad, never use it. Still got and use a windows lappy for updating the scala and pcv, as they don't support apple...yet.

One thing you can't level at Apple is delays of product launches. They're pretty methodical at their release cycles and for pushing the specs to almost bleeding-edge with alternate major releases. Their anti-competitive tactics in the Asian component market isn't entirely conducive to free and open trade but it does ensure that other mobile manufacturers are 12-18 months behind the curve. Then again, Apple do miss opportunities like putting NFC into the 4S, for example.

Don't agree with the 'simple one app OS' opinion. I've got an eminently extensible and highly customisable phone that has a wider range of apps and more depth within each genre than any other mobile platform. You do have to root your iphone to break the nanny-ism of Apple, but it certainly hasn't invalidated my warranty as I can return to stock any time I like.

Si I KNOW what your saying, been with PCs since the 8088 at a whoooooping 4.77Mhz! how things move on! got to admit that I use my Ipad3 more and more, damm I even take it with me now...lol Only really in my workshop do I use a PC oh and my quad core for some image work as I love my digital photography... some things on the iPad do my head in but I kind of see the fascination with Apple... maybe one day I will switch my desktops....

I'm sure your right and TBH I don't know enough about the OS to even comment, I am new to Apple and am sure in time will see the big picture... Problem with me is I know Apple from way back and even then only had small dealings with then at the time Adobe etc was a big player and a pain in my ass, then many years passed to now when I've only just re entered the Apple game with the iPad3..

I know where you're coming from. I'm by no means an Apple fanboi - in fact quite the opposite as I don't like their principles, the way they do business, their proprietary lock-ins, their "aren't we cool?" ethos and general bully tactics to other firms and customers who don't fall into line. And believe it or not I've never stepped into an Apple store (and never plan to!)

BUT, as a media consumption device the iOS platform is pretty hard to beat (when jailbroken), as it stands, partly due to innovation and plaigiarism, partly due to the economies of scale, and partly due to their nefarious business tactics. I think Android is too fragmented to stage a serious assault on the Apple customerbase, but Samsung is giving it a try.

Lol! Nice one, Si :D That's quite a collection.

The only Apple thing I've ever owned was a first generation iPod Nano.

I've still got an HTC Desire. I bought it SIM Free about 3 years ago and it's still working just fine. I often toy with the idea of changing it but I'm really not a very heavy mobile user or someone who feels the need to have the latest and greatest phone. As long as it'll access the net via wi-fi and make calls then that's all I really care about. My Desire still does that, albeit a bit slowly these days.

I also don't do phone contracts. I always buy my phones outright SIM Free and then get a 12 Month SIM Only contract. My current contract is for 300 Minutes, Unlimited texts, 750mb of mobile internet, 750mb of BT Openzone wi-fi and I pay £6.50 / month :D

Obviously it involves the initial outlay for the phone but as I say I've had the Desire for 3 years now and my thought is that once you've paid out and felt that sting for a couple of days you soon forget about it.

There's a lot of what I call 'magazine knowledge' surrounding the brand too. Even in my line, which is extremely Apple-centric, people will spec' things up and when you ask them why it's because they 'read it in magazine'. A point of case is a university fine art photographic department we deal with had 14 iMacs in their manipulation suite, the monitors for which wouldn't calibrate correctly. Big meetings and arguments about the iMac's suitability for this particular task and eventually they decide to replace them all...With new iMacs, the monitors for which can't be calibrated correctly. Everyone is shocked. Why oh why has this happened to us, the truth is because they believe an Apple product is the best solution without any real research into which Apple product. They just know it must be Apple.

    Their solution?

They've just bought 14 Eizo monitors from me which they are going to place in front of the iMac ones on the desks.

I really wouldn't buy a 4S now unless you get a VERY large discount on one. If going iOS then definitely wait for the 5.

I got mine free as an upgrade, and didn't want to wait for the 5, as it meant changing and spending more dosh on a bike case and cables for the sat Nav etc.... The 4 was s a brilliant phone anyway, so I'm happy with the 4s.

Makes sense as you're upgrading, Si. Coming from a HTC though and if Remal can cope with that for another 6 weeks then the jump to an iPhone 5 will blow his socks off! :D

They should contact you and try to offer you an upgrade, but you're under no obligation to take it if it doesn't work out to be favourable for you.

If you don't take it you should move onto a cheaper SIM-only tariff which will give you your free minutes/texts/data per month but without the included cost for the handset that you're not taking. Then, when a new handset that you want to get comes out you can start a new contract if you wish, or buy the handset outright and stay contract-free.

I'm keen to see the new iPhone, I know I'm a fan of HTC as its alive with features and animations that give the phone a nice feel, be interesting to see what Apple do that's going to kill the others... I do feel that iPhones are a little boring and fragile... maybe they will sort that this time...
