TOMTOM RIDER V2 UK & IRELAND 2ND EDITION TOM TOM RIDER on eBay! Garmin zumo 660 U.K. and Europe Motorcycle GPS Receiver | eBay the Garmin takes a 16gb sd car - so good for mp3's.. sat nav will be used more in the car then the bike.. what would you get? and why?
I have a tom tom 2... Does what it says on the box. I have not updated maps in years and still ok... Also I do not hook it up to the computer at all, so maybe I am using limited features... Once, while using it in a car, it took us off the motorway, under the motorway and then back onto the same motorway... Probably lost a signal for a while and got confused... It was close enough to the destination that I thought I had to leave the motorway... I don't normally follow it blindly... I have heard great things about the Garmin as well. I think with the Garmin you can log where you have been and upload that map... Maybe the tom tom 2 can, but I have never seen the option for that... Garmin also does what it says on the box... If I had to do it again, I would go for the Garmin, but only because I already have the tom tom and always wanted to try a Garmin...
Do you have an iphone? If yes, download the navfree app; its free & works brilliantly on the ipone; its all you need.
i thought about the iphone - but i cant find decent mounts for the RR5 and cover.. Si had one but that's for the later blade...i was going to buy it and make a mount like the one here.. http://1000rr.co.uk/mods-upgrades-accessories-products/5984.htm#post98757
What about one of these: Powered Waterproof Motorcycle Bike Mount + Hard Case & Charger for iPhone 4 4S | eBay
I don't know about better, but i use it and it's very good and I think the app was about £1.49 compared to something like £50 for the tomtom app!
I havn't tried the TomTom, but I use navfree all the time in the car & on the bike & its never let me down. If you use an iphone for satnav on the bike, remember to fix the screen in portait to stop it inverting when you brake; otherwise you will end up going backwards
Jail brake your phone.. ;-) how do you fix your screen position on the iphone..? did not think that was possible?
From Home screen, double click home button, then swipe to the right... Left-most button = screen position lock...
Makes sense to use the iPhone if you can as it'll be massively cheaper than buying a new TomTom/Garmin but if you're feeling flush I'd go for a dedicated satnav over the iPhone, personally. I've got the Zumo 660 and it is excellent. Rugged, waterproof, comes with a mount (although did buy the Telferizer RAM mount for the headstock for £20), bigger screen, large buttons you can use with gloves on, comes with lane assist, POIs, etcs. I've used it several times around Europe and it's sorted. Not much in it between the Garmin and TomTom, but personally I think the TomTom's fugly as hell!
I have a tom tom and Garmin 550. If it was me I would buy a Tom tom all day long. easy to use, goes the job and found nothing wrong with them
The Zumo 220 is a lower-spec model that is cheaper still, if you don't need all the features of the 660: Garmin Zumo 220 3.5" Sat Nav for Motorcycles
not as easy to update stuff on the garmin, where as the tom tom was quick and easy once you hooked it up to the pc for updates. setting out routes easier on the tom tom and the outlay was not easy to use and i just found the tom tom much better to get on and use.
Yeah, although they have gotten better with that as I managed to download Basecamp, import a .gpx to create a route, export it to my Zumo, whereupon it recognised that I hadn't updated my firmware for 2 years and proceeded to do so with no fuss, and then export the route - all within 5 minutes. Astounded, I was.
it doesn't say how easy it is to get the phone in and out of the case, and thinking with much use would the locking mechanism not come loose? i guess i could buy it and try it out..would the mount fit anywhere on the RR5?
