Tank cover off , lift the tank to disconnect the fuel line , remove tank and air box and you should have decent access then

Easiest way is to follow the instructions in the download-able service manual, it's in section 4.10 in maintenance.
But basically you need to -
    1/ remove the mid fairings.
2/ remove the seat, then the tank cover and tank.
    3/ remove the air box.
4/ pull back the rubber heat sheet and disconnect the plugs from the top of each coil pack.
5/ remove the coil packs ( they just pull up off the plugs but may be held firmly ).
6/ remove the plugs using a 16mm plug socket ( one that grips the socket so that when you remove the plug socket the plug comes out with it, they are located quite deep and cannot be reached with fingers )
7/ carefully replace sockets making sure not to cross thread them.
    8 replace everything in reverse.

Just done mine, its a fiddly job but take your time and its not that bad.

You should get about 30,000 miles from a set of plugs - they are expensive long life ones fitted as standard and think due for change at 32k

Why do the mid fairings need to come off ? You can lift the tank off with petrol in , it will be fine

Makes it easier to get access to the 2 outer plugs with the ram air tubes out the way, they sit just under the ram tubes just before they join the air box.

Combine spark plug exchange with valve clearance check

    Hi Bass,

it's quite some work you have to do to change the spark plugs on a 1K8, so it is best to synchronize it with every second valve clearance check, where you anyway have to dig deep into the top of the engine.

I did the valve clearance check on my 1K8 last winter and is currently finishing a series of detailed Do It Yourself articles which shows how to do it. The last few parts on getting the valve cover off and meassure the valve clearances are almost complete and will be uploaded this month.

The articles up to point of changing the plugs have been finalized though and you can read it all here: Valve Clearance Inspection - CBR 1000RR8 DIY

[IMG] [IMG] picture examples from the article (small versions only)

The articles also covers the 'nasty' details about getting the cowls off.

You can find DIY articles on many other tasks via the table of contents on Do It Yourself on Motorcycles, Cars, ... etc, and some general article about motorcycling here.

    Cheers ... Fred :)

    Hi guys!
Well, everything went fin thanx to your step by step Fred.
But!! And this is a big but =)

I cant manage to get the right side fairing back the way it should be. Its a little loose where the rubberthing is on the air intake (closest to the tank)
And also, I should have taken a picture of how the cables were placed under the headlights. Cos when i re-connected the vacum tubes and the other connections and try to install that cover under the headlights i cant get the fitting to be perfekt. Its a bit of a gap. Think i have the cables there under in a wrong way so they pull the cover down or something.

Anyone that can share a picture of how the cables are mounted under the cover (under headlights)
Also, a picture of how tight the fairings and covers are to the headlights? (a closeup pic on headlights)

    That would help alot!

    Hi bazz,

I may have pictures which show what you need, so I suggest you indicate with arrows on one or two of the pictures from one of my DIY articles from which positions/directions you need extra picture info.

I can't make any qualified guess, why your right side fairing does not settle correctly. I guess you have noticed that it requires a good tugh to get it out of the frame hole, and a similarily good push to get it into the frame hole again. Maybe a cable has been misplaced. The image below shows how it looks with the right middle cowl off.

    Thanx Fred!
Yea somethings wrong there. I dont remember for sure but i think it looked just the same. I do also think that i dont get it all the way into the frame hole.. but i sure did my best pressing and wiggeling.
    I saw this photo.

When this is removed, i would love to see how the cables are going in both directions. I think i messed something up there.

I did also notice something in the manual when reading about the side fairingcoming off. They are refering to a "special skrew" that helps aligning the side fairing? Didnt see anything like that. Just had two screws for the fairing on the side.

Don't know if it's any help Bazz, but i find that if you apply some WD40 to the end of the air duct thats connected to the fairing, then it slides a bit easier in through the frame hole and into the air box duct.

I have added two new images to the Middle Cowl, Removal/Installation article which may help you.

They show how tubes and wires are routed in the front right side under the head lights.

You can see high resolution version of the images by clicking on them in the article.
