I won't be able to supply regular updates as my mate is doing the work, but since September when I trashed the LH fairing, nose cone, clock bracket I've been getting parts - black panels were easiest to locate. Also used this as a chance for a service and replace some other parts I'd picked up in recent years. So.. bike dropped of Friday evening and today I dropped the box of parts round - so far its just strip down starting Left hand side view: Right hand view Crap from bellypan Top of radiator - how does stuff get everywhere? Nosecone - note the RH top part now separate from main part of nose.... gaffer tape done a good job! Rear of nose cone with headlamps and stuff, inner fairing parts all in bits after impact Clock mount bracket took a huge part of the impact - you can see the RH (left in this pic) is pushed in a fair way Misc plugs and stuff
Asked my mate to take pics as he goes along but not sure how many I will get to update this - fingers crossed a few text updates with progress. Full list of stuff to do is: 1. Remove all bodywork 2. Lift tank to allow the 2nd perm. wired cig socket to be removed - it feeds a cable for sat nav. 3. Remove air filter and clean with supplied kit 4. Replace spark plugs 5 Swap over ECU and Lock set 6. Remove Radiator and clean from both sides - suspect its caked in mud / silt - may need to be soaked overnight to soften it 6.1 Replace clutch cable when Radiator removed as told it makes it easier to route / fit. 7. Replace Clock mount bracket and nose cone fairing which holds headlamp unit and clocks etc. - double check tilt switch right way up! (easy mistake to make) 8 Fit new black screen to nose cone ( Note - Nose cone is fragile - maybe fit at end of works? 9. Oil and filter change (supplied) 10. Bodywork - small undertray part. rattle can gloss black, or use Black gloss sheet to wrap it (needs most of electrics / battery tray removed to access screws for this 11. Tail unit has minor mark - black sheet may cover this 12. Replace front disks and if needed pads 13. RH Fairing - drill hole to stop crack spreading, hot glue / body filler on inside - Not got R&G's - glue takeway plastic lid on inside or similar to cover hole? 14. Damage on leading edge of RH fairing - gloss black film over this may be easiest way to improve it 15. Fork oil not been changed for a while but no idea what's involved in that (this is a nice to have - not vital) 16. Tyres - both are finished so fit suppled ones (he has machine to swap over) 17. Scottoiler - tempted to remove it as find it makes bike filthy 18. Re-fit replacement bodywork
Colin, its only fitting parts really, not like your engine rebuild - it all just bolts / screws on really! Also once its apart for one think you have access for another (like remove air box for plugs, when lifting tank for those swap ECU for example) slowest thing prob. swapping the fairing infill panels over onto new parts and getting it all back on.
Yup your right Al. Once you get it all stripped down it a lot easier to get in and do all the bits that need done. Makes for easier access. I'd be right in there with the cleaning though which would take up just as much time
Costs not been too bad so far. Disks 175 a pair Clutch cable 8 Clock bracket 100 from Dunlops race bike Panels 125 Ecu and lock set 250 which is good price but fault caused by me Plugs 55 Brake pads 55 Oil and filter 20
Minor update from the rebuild god (aka my mate Chris) Oil and filter done, ECU and lockset swapped Spark plugs swapped over Tonight I swapped tank cover infill and LH fairing in-fill panels over from Rothmans kit to replacement Black kit - there IS a huge difference in quality / fit etc -the outside finish is good mind and always got complements on finish.
good luck getting it all sorted mate, why are you changing the ecu and lockset did it develop a fault?
I spiked the ECU when distracted / frustrated by neighbour who would not p!ss off when I was working on bike outside garage putting electrics back on - I shorted a 12v USB adapter for a satnav and that was it - no more rev counter
Valuable lesson for everyone there Al, when working on the bike, work inside the garage, and at all times keep the garage door closed and the radio turned up
Moment I heard USB adapter pop and panic to unplug battery he said 'oh I can see you are busy, I'll leave you to it' - he's been wittering on some crap about Europe or similar that I had zero interest in
Small update - clock mount bracket swapped over last thing last night. Need to locate 3m usb cable with a waterproof connector to replace the one that has gone rusty that is on there now - ebay here I come. Also black rim tape to replace metallic blue No photos of progress yet -
Few updates - Met up with 'YorkshireGooner' this morning to pick up the small under tray part in black to replace the china one and save painting the chipped white one - unexepected bonus it has ventura sheild over it already. Then called in to drop said part off and check all OK with bike. Rear view with tank raised for access: New clock bracket fitted Air inlets with air box and air filter removed Side View Front view Few screws loose (and air filter cleaner bottle lol) Clean air filter Old plugs after about 25,000 miles Next task is clean through radiator with warm water and air line to remove crap off fins Then wheels off, disks swap, tyre swap, black rim tape, clutch cable then bodywork - plus a decent clean up of the whole thing while its stripped down
Just had an update text: "Just to let you know that bike running with new lockset and ECU inc. rev counter" So it must be getting close to bodywork time! Think this weekend its radiator removal for wash through and clean fins with airline, new disks fitted, new tyres then almost bodywork time
be very very very carefull with an air line on the rad,they are very prone to squashing.personally i'd just saok it in some lightdegreaser and rinse with fresh water then leave to dry.
