Going up with a pal to look at an RSV1000R 2005 for a test ride and he's taking the cash ... so he's serious! Up for £3750.00, clean, tax, mot 19,000 on the clock.. Red n Black. It's the last of his inheritance so he wants something to show for it, he's relatively new to bikes but has ridden lots so there's no problem with his capabilities... Atm he has an old CBR600F so it's a bit of a step up... The only advice I have given him to date is that he should get some taste and get a proper bike but he has his heart set on this... If anyone can chip in with things to look out for or questions to ask about that particular model - that would be peachy...
I don't know much about them, I heard that older ones aren't very reliable but I don't know what's classed as old I would get an RR4 if I was him
Get him to look here, they're a friendly bunch... Aprilia RSV Forum One thing i'd say when i had mine is that the electrical gremlins are a pain and make sure it has FSH/old MOTs as when the battery dies the clocks reset on some models!! If he can stump for a factory then go for that, much better resale value and better spec. If he chopped in the 600F he might be able to get something like... Aprilia RSV 1000 R 2007 | eBay - bit newer with less miles with warranty etc?
No comment!!! Looked at these before plunging for a blade, Not the most reliable and as already said clock resetting is common so history a must.Good luck cos he will be looking at you if its a wrong un.
My advice would be to try and get him to go Japanese. My mate has had an 03 RSV1000 and an 05 Tuono. Both nothing but trouble electronically, the Tuono being the worst! He now has a blade.
My mate had a 04 rsvr start of the newer shape he had problems with clocks resetting steaming up recalled ones have little vent holes in the top Of clocks sprag clutch knackered up due to trying to start it with flat battery keep her on trickle charge at all times . Rear brakes hardly work as rear master bolted to engine boils fluid people have made brackets to stop this though. He has done over 35k on his though so really not that bad for the mileage
got a mate with one 05 or 06 loves it,it sounds awesome and he babies it .BUT it has been a little problematic typical italian stuff electrics!! the last time we went up country it just stopped, the pipe had come off of the pump which is inside the tank. aa truck home. i believe this is how the italian bike manufacturers get their mpg up you ride 1 way and the tow truck brings you home before i get shot down i have owned a duke
my second bike is a tuono 1000 which is mechanically identical and generally i think its a great bike. clutch slave cylinders leak a bit of fluid but a oberon replacement at around £100 sorts that out. i,ve had no problems whatsoever in all weathers, do have a bit of misting in the clocks but never had them resetting themselves. the rotax motor is a sweet grunty old thing but has a thirst for the fuel. i can,t speak highlyenough of mine and wouldnt hesitate to get another. good luck!
I had new shape one 8500 miles on clock great to ride but wow after 2 weeks it kept stoping then it said i was doing 150 when i was parked up {didnt go that fast was it was ok] ANYWAY SENT IT TO APRILIA PERFORMANCE IN TAMWORTH. Nearl 500 notes later and 5 weeks i got it back and sold it i couldnt have a bike to ride if i didnt know if it would make it any whereClock problems no back brake at all side stand needs to be changed as it stand vertical .Tell him get a gixxer or blade mate and save his dosh as he will need plenty dosh in repair bills .Some lads on that forum site sarted breaking them as they just gave up on them
Dependant on what he wants check seating postion if he isnt used to it. They are quite tall and the suspension is rock hard even compared to the likes of the 1098 , 1198 or BMW. Dont panic I do have a blade but it isnt a fair comparison!
One or 2 other quick thoughts on the 2005 / 2006 or there abouts we noticed that after a while the vibration cracked the casing on the indicators(fracture marks). May have been a design fault (or perhaps spirited riding of course )but you may want to ask the question or check if they have had a problem and you might want to consider getting a spacer between the plastics and the unit to buffer the vibration. With regards parts nowadays Piaggio are getting much better at supplying but there was a big problem when Aprillia got taken over shipping parts in so again you might want to check how long it takes in case its your only transport!
ive had 2 never an issue with either, but i would go for a clean mille rather than the newer shape, better bike all round, and the r,all the goodies standard.
