I do like to sail close to the wind by powering out of bends (probably due to my poor corner speed) and many of you will no doubt notice how the front goes light on almost every bump in the road when pulling hard in low gears, but today, for the first time i managed to get a full on jump over a bridge TT style (or so i thought). I immediately shit myself and backed off mid air, in doing so the engine braking upon landing was like pulling a cars handbrake for a split second as the back wheel squirmed around, fortunately the momentum pulled the bike bike in line and i powered away again, glancing down to see to see that I must have been doing around 85 I think the moral here is, if you take off, keep it nailed, or else the back will want to come round on you.
I took a local bridge years ago on an original MY93 Blade and 'sent it on a bit' (to use an Irish phrase) a bit too much on the other side in an attempt at a decent Wheelie. Over cooked it big time and found me sen pointing skywards at 12 O'clock! Stamped on the rear brake, slammed me forks in to Australia and popped a fork seal!
problem with rolling off mid flight too is it can make the bike land nose first. there is a jump beside me on an uphill run but they constantly resurface it so one year its smooth and the next its a mega jump.I near wrecked myself on it once when I used to do my usual trick of let a mate take lead then pass them on the jump as I like a bit of airtime. but this time the jump was quite sharp unknown to me and I hit it with the throttle pinned on my RR5.lets say it was less bike jump and more motocross jump.my mate near needed a change of trunks as well as me, he said he was sitting about 60 and looked to his right to see my footpeg level with his head. needless to say I got a great nutshot and somehow managed to wreck a forkseal, was lucky I didnt do more damage.im not as gun ho over that jump now unless I have had a run over it earlier. this is the offending road if any of you come over for the nw200
Have often wondered what others do in these circumstances. I've not tried it on my blade yet, but previously I've always shut the throttle, as otherwise the engine suddenly goes mad. And what then when the tyre hits tarmac again?
There is an amazing road from Market Harborough to Uppingham that has several jumps... There is a good video by MCN telling you how to handle jumps. Riding a MotoX bike teaches you quickly to... braking and accelerating mid air is all the control you have when in the air for 5 seconds lol
last year was out with a few mates over north yorks and on the run between ingleton to hawes we got held back behind some sheep trailers... when we got chance to catch up, i sees my mate on his rr5 tuck in and pin it.... i thinks to meself, oh. he doesnt know about the jumps then (theres 2 about 100 yards apart) he must have hit them at 150+ and actually hit the crest of the second jump as he landed the first, right on his nads! funny as fk, he jammed on and rolled off the bike in agony! another one over the tops at denbigh, coming from llyn brenig way, gets me every time... theres a massive leap with a 90 left about 150 yards after it.... a few times there ive ended up sat on the filler cap lol on that hawes run, theres one spot with a massive hidden dip.... rather than a jump, if you gas it on the top of the dip you get an amazing crest wheelie all the way down and it (should) land nice! done it past a carfull last year and gave em a thumbs up as i passed them
I used to like powering over crests until last year when going over a small Crest the power just really kicked In at that moment. Front came up so fast I didnt have time to think about the back brake. ..I was eye to eye with the Fuel cap and thought oh balls this is going to hurt, done a max baggi style Wobble and recovery, still don't know how I didn't flip it.
