To answer my own questions for anyone else interested: After first tracing the wires up to the green wired plug and disconnecting it the bike started normally and no MIL code blinked suggesting i had the wrong plug - at least this allowed me to work out that the lower half of the plug is fixed to the frame and the upper half comes off.

I shut down the bike and traced the wires again with more prodding, pulling etc and came to the grey and white wired plug as I first thought. I reconnected the first plug and unplugged the upper half of the plug from the fixed lower half. I started the bike and got a 23 MIL code. With a bit of searching it appears 23 is the code for a disconnected O2 sensor (Its NOT in the manual).

In summary: Squeeze the top/back of the upper part of the plug with the white and grey wires that is found on the inside of the frame roughly where your left knee would be when riding and pull it up away from the fixed lower half.
