Gear shifts are fine, but going into first from stationary give's a real #CLUNK@ Could it be my 09 Blade or is this typical. Anyone know a fix? Should I use higher viscosity oil?
Tbh I have found most bikes do a bit of the clunk thing going into first but best way to minimise it is to wait a few seconds after pulling in the clutch lever before actually switching into first gear. But as said double check your chains not too slack as this can make it sound worse if not correctly adjusted.
Normal for a Blade my 2007,2010,2012,2013's all do it/did it see a pattern emerging! my Speed triple doesn't clunk but its a different gearbox. Be careful with the chain tension - too tight will defiantly cause some damage. stick to the recommended tension
As soon as I saw the heading I knew I was gonna find a lot of that's normal. I nearly didn't buy a 2005 blade coz of it. Now on my third (2011) and I don't even notice it anymore.
Thanks guys, will double check the chain tension. I know its typical for a bike, but seemed very harsh on my Blade and knew it couldn't be wear and tear as its only done 3.7K Reassuring to know
I find if you clutch in and give it a bit before engaging it seems to drop in a bit smoother Possibly a safety feature ,you wouldnt want it to drop in when stood tickin over and your 5 yr old gives it a little blip My ninja done the same too
I think a lot of the reason why Bikes have this 'Big Clunk' when engaging 1st is that when a bike is idling in neutral there is a big diff in the rotational speed of the engines clutch plates and the stationary gearbox cogs, thus when 1st is engaged this 'differential' is 'equalised' thus causing the Clunk. Once the box is on the move this differentiation is almost nil hence why shifts seem so slick on the move. This is also what happens when you miss a full bore up change and then have a second attempt at engaging the next gear and you subsequently get another big clunk at the engine speed has now overtaken the gearbox rotational speed.
