I just got my first log book service done at the stealership. I noticed on the receipt they used Ipone 20w-50 oil. The manual calls for 10w-40 oil for my region. Reckon its too thick? Ambient temps currently around 30-40c Celcius.
20w-50 isn't that designed for classic engines ? I'm no oil expert but I think I would be giving them a call and asking their reasons for using 20w-50 instead of the recommended grade
Just gave them a call and they basically said its what they have on hand in the summer months. He went on to say it covers a range of bikes so thats what they think is best to use in the heat. He said it will be fine but they can change to 10w-40 if i wanted for free. Problem is they are around 100km away so might just switch it myself.
Maybe before you do anything pop a post in the Opie Oils section and ask their advice, as you guys do see some prolonged extreme temps
IMHO 20w50 is too heavy for the blade. The 50 part would be ok in our extreme temperatures but cold start oil circulation could be a problem, especially in a new engine. I use 15w50 in my old VFR 750 but 10w40 in the blade. I bet the engine is quiet though Also if you changed it yourself they would never know, but thats not the point, they should follow the manufacturers recommendation.
Thanks for the reply. I actually find the engine to be quite noisy before and after this change. I swapped the oil over 3 times before i got to 1000km and used the GN4 10w30 oil. I will probably drop it myself and replace with Motul 5100 10w40.
i was planning to try this oil next time as it is becoming very difficult to find my favorite oil in the uk(elf moto xt4 10-50) the multigrade oil spec for different temp range varies. when rr8 were sold in the uk they all came with a castrol 10-30 synthetic recommendation label on the engine casing. i thin 30 is too low even in england where summer temp of 25 + is very rare.this combined with the fact that the rr runs at high temp once you r in town & traffic made me decide to stay with 50 or 40 as minimum. in your case, if your daily temp stays above 15 deg, then 20-50 would be fine. for lower temp z(incl zero or below), then you can drop to 10-40 or 10-50 in case you were not aware the in a multi-grade oil spec such as 10w50, the first number refers to the viscosity at cold temperature & the second is viscosity at high temp i think the motule oil is double esterwould be interested to read your feedback on it once you have done few thou's with it
Castrol Power 1 Racing here. It's what the bike came with so I'll be using that in the future I reckon.
already wrote , best quality ,motul 5100 or 7100 i suggest 10-40 for sc 57 04>07 and 10-30 for sc59 08> also impressive see a lot are using castrol...
I have used that in my race bike, but to chuck 60€ away every 3 or 4 trackdays is just stupid, the oil hasn't even changed colour from that fluo yellow, spoke to my dealer the other day as I'm now racing on the blade and he recommended the motul 7100 half synthetic 10w40
My blade has 10w30 in, I've only had it just over a month. It seems to be noisier when warm, might try 10w40 if it's any better. I change my oil every 3 k in my bikes. Semi syn oils seem thicker, I prefer to use semi over fully. If you change your oil frequent enough you can't go wrong.
Being new to this game, I've deducted from all of this, that my blade burns a fair amount of oil & there's a lot of opinion of what's the best oil to use. I certainly noticed very early on, that there was a speed related rumbling type noise coming from the bike. I'm sure that it's coming from the gearbox too & take it that it's fairly normal - much like the clunk when selecting first gear from neutral. I've read this thread & I'm none the wiser. With this in mind, I just called the place where I got the bike, Victor Devine's in Glasgow, to ask what they use. My oil level's low & I want to avoid mixing. This's their official answer: <8000 miles - Silkolene Super 4 10w 40 mineral oil. £7.22/litre 8000> miles - Silkolene Comp 4 10w 40 synthetic oil. £9.98/litre
I'm a car mechanic and the 10w40 full syn seems very thin where as a 10w40 semi syn seems thicker. It may be different with bike oil.
I just thought the way you replied with the job tittle reference was it bit harsh. I see oil everyday, hence why i said i was a mechanic, not because i know it all. I wasn't telling anyone facts, it was my opinion, nor did i say to anyone buy this particular oil. after all this is a forum, full of "friendly" helpful "advice" and not always facts. I don't come on these forums to be made to feel moronic. My wife is good enough at doing that.
