Been looking for an old motocross bike or trials bike to restore as a winter project...
Anyway last week a purchased a (apparent) 1979 Yamaha TY250 trials bike for the tidy sum of £200, its not been started for over 20yrs but the guy said it did work and tbh i believe him...

So i start to strip the bike down and see little tell tale signs that it used to have lights, it has a brakelight bracket on the frame, a hole in the rear mudguard for wiring with a faint outline of where a light mount once fitted and the front of the loom has been cut and tucked under the tank for the front light etc.

At this point i'm starting to get excited about getting the old girl restored and possibly getting it on the road... but then i get stroked by the paranoia brush... Is it nicked:unsure:

The Problem... How an i find out if it's stolen?

It has matching frame and engine numbers, i've rung the DVLA and they say they can't help me without a registration number (after being on the phone for 20mins:mad:) .
I also thought i'd try ringing my local police station for help but they said 'sorry, we can't disclose that information' something to do with the data protection act?

Last thing i want to do is restore a 32yr old bike only to find out it's stolen once it's finished... any ideas folks?

    cheers.

Mycarcheck.com does advertise that it can check based on VIN numbers, perhaps they can help.

Can't the Feds just just do a check and give you a yes or no answer without divulging any further information. I'm sure that won't contravene the data protection act.

    What about the V5?

It may have had a tail light just to be an endure bike . Could have been on a daytime only licence like the modern day enduro bikes that you buy with a brake light but its totally up to you if you register it or not

If it was on the road then it should have cut wires on the loom for indicators , headlights etc . If its just a tail light id say chances are it wasn't on the road . just had them for green lane purposes

Yeh it's in very good condition considering its age and what it was built for.
To be fair, it's sat in a garage for the past 20yrs under blankets.

Getting back to the question in hand... I wonder how people find out if a motocross is stolen?
    They don't have number plates.

Just a quick bump on this post, anyone have any ideas how to find out if an off road bike is not stolen?
(IE no number plate, just engine and frame numbers).

Unless it is reported stolen mate then i don't think you will find out. With out a log book I'm guessing to get this on the road you are going to have to re register it with the DVLA giving it a new number plate and therefore no history

Im not sure that is how it works thou . Have you tried asking the DVLA ?
