hi guys i am planning a touring trip into europe. do you think 4 days is enough to get to Switzerland and back. also how many miles is comfortable to do in one day??
Only you can answer the milage question mate, depends how comfy you feel on a particular distance. IMO its not always about the miles per hour, it's more the smiles per mile. Tbh I've never gone that way, but your relatively local to ports so getting over the water is minus 7 hrs what us northerners would quote? That said, I would still reckon its a slog? Si goes that way quite a bit he would probably give you a better idea of realistic days etc. Failing that, rather than just for the sake of a stamp on the passport, head north, Scotland is just delicious with some roads that would make you think your abroad anyway. Sorry, not really much help was I, hope you get the answers your looking for
You could do it, but why would you? Nicer places to head for with four days to play with, Luxembourg, Germany, Vosges, check out some of the trips on the touring section
Although Switzerland is a beautiful place, with fantastic roads and passes...4 days there and back would be a right slog. We do serious miles when away, but that wouldn't be enjoyable... There's simply too many roads and places to stop at and take a nice lunch, admire the scenery etc... That's part of touring IMO. as for comfortable miles per day, it's entirely up to you. We've done 685miles in one day, only because we decided to take in 2 passes which detoured us 280 miles from Italy, through Austrian mountains , over to Switzerland into Germany , then back into France in one day. Although great fun and caning it as we had to be back, it was so tiring it was unbelievable. Wouldn't change that for the world though as it gave us some fantastic memories. Now, we make sure we only do 250 ish per day, sometimes less, take 9 days of enjoying roads, maybe doing them twice by turning around if they are that good, lunch, photos, coffees chatting etc... Makes for a better and more enjoyable time in my opinion. And your arse don't half kill ya after 400 miles in the saddle lol.
cheers for the info guys. i think 250 ish miles per day sounds about right. the only reason i suggested Switzerland is that the roads and scenery there looks amazing. but if there are nicer roads that are closer i'm all ears. i've only ever did touring in the car so it will be a totally different experience on the bike.
