I hear you must carry it with you, can you take a photo copy or do you need original, just don't want to lose it!

always carried original plus insurance plus AA or similar. It's law in Germany, Spain and a few others.

Best option is to just colour copy V5 BUT have your originals for the troublesome folk.

Always taken originals and some colour copies with me, I stick them in a plastic wallet and put them in the back protector bit of my jacket, if an accident is bad enough to wreck them then paperwork is the least of my worries, but I don't have to worry about forgetting them in a hotel room.

Wether car or bike abroad always carried originals, as stated sure copies are not accepted, you can get waterproof folders & I put all my documents/licence in one place and leave them there with €100, 17 days away last year only had to produce once :)

When on the bike or going over in the kit car I take V5, Insurance and a copy of both. What I've always been told you need.

Never been asked when I have been abroad, although I will take colour copy of my V5 this time when going to Holland.
Copy of insurance I have on e mail so can show that via my phone
I'm like you don't like the idea of losing such things

We got pulled in Switzerland for no motorway tax disc (we were trying to avoid them but failed miserably), my mate had forgotten his V5 and they held all 7 cars till he got a copy faxed through, so a copy may prove to be enough but I always take mine. You can always get another so why not is my thinking :)

You are best advised to take the originals. In France you are just asa likely to be stopped by Customs (Douane in french) and you will be required to prove the vehicle is yours with the correct documents. If the vehicle is borrowed a letter from the owner AND the V5 will be required.
Failure to provide documents may result in a fine but will certainly mean a lengthy "talk" with the authorities be they Customs or Police.

The AA have good advice here driving abroad, general advice | AA

Take the full set, leave copies at home, makes it easier replacing them. I have only been stopped once in too many years, but if things go 'Bits up vicar' it can save you a lot of time.
    ........Have a great time,

When I had my Blade confiscated in France, for speeding a couple of years ago, they took my V5 as well.

I suspect that if I not had the original V5 with me they would have locked me up until they'd got it.

Don't take it at your peril.

They never received the one sent for the bike shop, sent
another that they may not of got also !!

Told them that I'm off to Italy on the 27th may so need it by then.

If not I'll have to take my chance !
