I went out with a bloke a few weeks back who rode like that everywhere. I swear he spent more time on 1 wheel than 2. Made me laugh a lot whilst at the same time fearing for his licence and trying to get some distance between us by hanging back. Not sure I'll do it again. No doubt he has some talent but there's a time and a place, and it's not all the time and everywhere!

It was this speech that first started the FBI investigating whether he was a communist sympathiser...

So much for encouraging people to free themselves...

Very well done, but wasn't it a parody film I.e. not actually a real speech??

Excuse my ignorance.... But can think of a few historically significant speeches which were quite impressive.

I think it was an attempt by a talented, intelligent but, sadly politically naive man, to strip the bullshit off the attitudes of appeasement in Europe and isolationism in the US that was clouding the reports coming out of Germany of treatment of the Jews by the nazi state. He saw his position as an entertainer as ideal to warn the masses of the nazi atrocities.

The parody was just his art. It was how he guaranteed the bums on seats to hear his fears voiced. The true tragedy was that even he wasn't capable of demonstrating the actual events taking place, such was the true horror of them and by attempting to, in his view, waking everybody up to them, branded himself as politically subversive in his own home.

It's an example of confirmation bias. Hindsight makes it seem uncannily clairvoyant, but that's based on what we came to know after. At the time, to the great unwashed, Hitler was a man who dragged Germany from bankruptcy to almost singlehandly ruling the whole of Europe in less than a decade. Not many appreciated the idea of an entertainer, a clown, making fun of an incumbent national ruler at the time, and in the States, at least, until the events of December 7, 1941, public feeling would still not have been in favour to intervene.

It is a good speech. Now. Then it was a rant by an, in the view of the American people, slightly suspect (was he Jewish?), foreign actor, condemning a progressive new government...
