Just took the bike in to try and cure a lot of vibration through bars and pegs. Bike vibration will disappear if you put slight pressure on clutch lever. Dealer took clutch apart, nothing found, oil changed. Clutch has gone from silky smooth to Heavy as hell and almost lumpy as if the centre shaft is sticking. Lever takes full strength to pull to select gear and the bite point is almost not there, as if she's spinning up, slipping on take off. vibration still there and gets smooth when you take up slight pressure on lever. Finding gear selection hard at times when warm. Trying to adjust the clutch on the lever is hard. What the hell is going on? Your thoughts please. My thoughts are that vib is caused by bearings in clutch basket on centre shaft, bikes only done 4000. Vib from new really. The heaviness of the clutch?? Incorrect rebuild?? Concave disc back to front?? Dunno. Taking it back to dealer but I'm expecting ....... Seems ok to me mate, any suggestions?
Probably completely wrong here, as usual you might say, but people have been complaining of gear selection problems after filling to Castrol Power 1. Have a search on here as there has recently been a thread about it.
Yes that would be me before!! Castrol gave me vibration issues a little. But this time is definitely something wrong with clutch. I'm studying diagram of clutch. RR8 does it have same clutch? Anyone care to explain what is happening when clutch pulled in? The feel is like lumpy custard when every other clutch is smooth and progressive. This is also heavy as hell. 1 cable moves- could it be misrouted causing lumpiness. 2. Lever pawl twists- does the clutch lifter lever engage in a slot in the lift lever shaft? Or does if float on top? Can it be fitted floating on top and cause a non smooth feel?? 3. Pressure applied to clutch centre- nothing can go wrong here surely? 4. Clutch spring plate pushes plates apart - now I'm out of my depth...... What's difference between clutch plates a b and discs a b c ?? Is it obvious? Could they be fitted incorrectly? Would that cause lumpy operation? I'm thinking it's around lifter mech. All the rest is fed by spring plates and they surely wouldn't push lumpy so it could be felt through lever? Surely? On a separate note. Vibration on bike felt through clutch. It disappears totally when very slight pressure applied to lever. What is this telling me. It has vibs until I apply pressure? Could that be the rollers on the lifter plate? Considering the manual says check they turn smoothly and also quietly, plus if they fit looseY in the housing replace. Lots of info... Can you tell I'm an engineer. . I'm just trying to find the problem that the dealer has introduced and also prep them for issues in vibration as they seem to be ignoring it and stating its fine.... It's not , it's annoying as anything. Thanks for all the help chaps
Update. Have taken it upon myself to remove the cover. Problems encountered so far. 1. Oil level way too high. 5mm above mfl ( dealer fill) 2. One clip not attached by dealer when refitting cover( not good enough) 3. Clutch lifter bearing although spins very freely, will allow lot of axial movement of the lifter pin. This is causing drag of the lifter plate. I have a theory. Clutch vib stops immediately when pressure applied to clutch lifter plate. I believe the plate to be rattling around too much due to bearing axial play and it will catch on the side of the clutch when misaligned. The more play in the lever the more it's allowed to be misaligned. It would also produce that lumpy clutch notchy drag feeling when pulled. Any ideas welcomed. The clutch basket has very slight play in it is this normal? Or should this be solid? Should I take the whole clutch apart and start measuring. It's always done this and oil change has helped but not cured.
Ok, seeing as no one has any opinions other than the norm about oil I shall update myself. 0.14 axial play in clutch basket fully torqued which indicates maybe wrong needle fitted?? New needle ordered. Lifter plate bearing ordered. Mystery of clutch feeling heavy notch and bloody awful causing slip and no adjustment?????...... The master technician at the dealership left the service bolt in the clutch pack. 6mm x 35mm holding all plates together whilst you take it in and out. Embarrassed ..?. .... He will be!! There is nothing else to change for vibration. So, when all spare arrive and are fitted. I will provide a further update.
Sounds like you're doing a good job. Sorry I can't help, it's out of my depth, but keen to hear how you get on.
Yeah, that's just what I was thinking, retaining bolt left in the clutch............. Bloody numpty! Don't know about embarrassed, he should be sacked. Hope you're gonna get some good will off them mate.
Well the update is bad. I've tried refitting the clutch and when placing the clutch together I caught the splines and peened them over slightly which meant I couldn't get the clutch off. I eventually pulled it off only to rip inside aluminium splines on slipper. Spent ages filling the rough bits off them to smooth it out and also the splines on output shaft. Drama over or so I. Thought. Fitting cover was a nightmare. I felt I had it. But as I was tightening bolts there was a bang . The inside starter gear must have been not located somewhere as it's broke a tooth off the gear!!!!!! Argh! More expense. I'm now inspecting the casing off any damage. Seems ok. But another hundred quid down tubes and still bike in pieces. How the bloody hell do you fit the damn clutch cover without causing concern... .?? It's a fickin nightmare
I received my money back plus the tool cost for removing the stake nut. The rest of the job was down to me. I'm not happy. Cost me 4 weeks in time off the road with spares. New oil by me, replaced bearing by yours truly, new idler when I bust it by muggins for a £100. All my time and effort is free apparently??,? Weird when granthams honda want £90 an hour for a technician that leaves bolts in, can't read an oil level and wouldn't know vibration if it was written on a big sign in big letters with a big friggin flashing light on it saying hello I'm vibrating !!!!!!! Yes tahrs right it's my akrapovic?? Or my short levers?? Just say sorry we are pants and we don't know? It's easy it's called being honest. Rather than take my money and give me back more work to sort it out. I don't suffer fools gladly
Clutch now back together. Lovely and smooth. I'm sure I saw the spring seat fitted incorrect fly as well. My lesson is now to do most if not all jobs myself. I've had it with dealerships knowing nothing about my bike. Save my money an fix it myself is the motto. The cover needs patience , do a dry run before you use gasket cement. Works better when you also put a wee bit of grease on the inside locating holes for the gears. It's good to get back on the road again. It flies, it's smooth and it's all my handiwork. Thanks to honda NOT!!
